Hey folks,
To your great joy and I'm sure annoyance that I didn't do this sooner, I've decided to channel my inner Rarity and will be generously extending the contest deadline.
The new deadline is:
Due Date: September 9th, 11:59 PM CST, 2018
Two whole weekends worth of extra writing time. If you've already finished, take the time to shop it around to editors and polish it up a bit. If you've already published, you're still free to change the story up until the due date, should you find any errors or decide to make major revisions. And if you had already given up because you knew you wouldn't make the deadline, well.
Now you don't have any excuse.
We're at 36 entries right now, and more keep rolling in. Let's pump those numbers up.
I was hoping to use the "ran out of time" excuse but I guess I can't now, huh.

Actually, with so many entrants I fully expect for there to be someone in this contest better than me. Probably many someones. Buuut I also like to channel my inner Rainbow Dash during contests, so...

Couldn't you have just said September 9th to begin with? I worked hard to get my story finished before the deadline, and now I find it was all for nothing.

I understand that it can be frustrating, but the fact that you worked hard, wrote a story, and then published it doesn't seem like its "nothing" to me.

I don't know about all the competition, but you certainly trounced me. Every time I improve my writing, I initially look back at it and think I may actually be a pretty good writer, but then I read a really good story, and I realize how much I have to improve on. And I thought I had a shot at honorable mentions this year. Ha!
...why did I start telling you my depressing life story? Anyways, I'm sure you'll be in the Top 5 at least! I'd even bet 50 cents on it!

Hey, as long as you maintain that desire and willingness to improve, you're doing alright in my book. And who knows? Perhaps you'll do better than you think.
On the one hand, I'm happy for everyone who was panicking about the deadline.
On the other, I'm more than slightly frustrated over passing up several activities last weekend to make sure the rough draft was sufficiently put together to hand off to prereaders.
Overall:
While I feel for the people who wouldn’t have been able to finish a story by the original deadline, especially if it’s because of reasons outside their control, I’m also rather annoyed that the change came so close to the original deadline and also so suddenly. I would not have asked for an extension myself, regardless of the reason, nor would I have wanted one to be given, and I wish there had been a way for me to voice that opinion before it happened, even if it wouldn’t have mattered in the end.
I hope people make good use of the extra time--I’m certainly thinking of looking over my own entry a bit more to see if there’s anything to be done to improve on it. What’s done is done, and it doesn’t stop me from thinking that running contests like this is a great thing for you to do, but I really don’t like the way this was handled.
Ahhh, this is a relief. I've been worried I wouldn't be able to enter as work has been calling me in so much and I am currently in a straight 12 day work schedule. It ends tomorrow, though, so I'll finally have the time to sir down and write.
Are you saying that now, when I still utterly fail to finish on time, I'll have only myself to blame?
I guess I didn't need to rush so much. Ah well.
Thank god, now I can procrastinate another week.
