Blog Number 42: Checking the Answering Machine Edition

Over the next few hours or days or however long I take doing it, I'll be going through the messages people have left since my last blog post and giving them a long-overdue answer. Much as I'd intended the hiatus to be a break, breaking off to the point of radio silence is a bit extreme and rather rude of me. So I'll at least give a few people their dues.

Just to make clear: I still haven't decided whether or not I'll be coming back to write more. Part of me says yes, part of me says no, and there's no clear winner at this point. It could be a while before a definite verdict is reached. Ultimately, it comes down to wanting badly to write on the one hand, but wanting to avoid the temptations of stress on the other.

Most of all, I set myself a goal at the beginning of the year: end 2018 with at least one novel completed. Not conceptualized, not planned, not begun: completed. Most of the hiatus has involved me trying to address this one commitment, with limited (OK, with little) success. Nevertheless, what I hope is that fulfilling this dream will determine whether or not long-term writing is for me.

Despite my short stories and minifics, it's ultimately novels that I want to write. Always have done, always will do. But until I can show the discipline needed to produce a quality novel too, all other projects are on hold. It's currently a self-imposed test.

That's all for now. I'll start answering messages, and if anything changes, I'll let you know. Until then, Impossible Numbers out.

An Old Tale in a New World, unsurprisingly, didn't make the cut. To my surprise, Jailhouse Rock fared reasonably well, despite a few technical hiccups and no shortage of perspective issues. While I don't feel motivated to edit those, I am taking the prereader's advice onboard in case I tackle future such projects.

New Stories?:
Impossible Numbers' Flashfic Anthology, Volume Two. Anyone who's involved in Loganberry's Flashfic Contests will likely recognize these as contestants, some of which I gave a polish before publishing again.

I hope you do write more, your writing is so great. :D

Hey, thanks! I'm glad you enjoy it so much.

Your writing is indeed great! I too want to write novels, but I’ve clung to the ponyfic bandwagon for as long as I have because it’s been a great way to improve my writing and to deal with some of the stresses that come with the craft. I’m not claiming it’s a perfect process, or that that’s going to prove true for everyone. I’m just saying that your pony stories aren’t wasted time, in the grand scheme. Every story you write makes the next one better.

Be sure to send us a link, when that novel hits the shelves .

I obviously think your writing is good since, y'know, I did a whole blogpost about it and everything...

Blog 42, eh? Insert all the usual jokes and not-mentioned-a-million-times-before-really references here.

I think you're a very fine writer, but of course I defer to the people here who know more than I do about it. Happily, they think you're a very fine writer, too -- so hurrah for that and an éclair for both of us, as Mrs Miggins once said.

Heh, I know what you mean. I feel I've been refining my technique here, thanks to other users and writers chipping in. Not forgetting the contests I've joined over the years.

If the novel hits shelves: let's not predict too much, here. :applejackunsure:

Oh? In that case, I must go looking for it. I'll dock you points if I don't see Lapidify in there somewhere, mind. :rainbowlaugh:

42? Douglas Adams will never die. :yay: In which case, thanks for the éclair, but I'd prefer one small piece of fairy cake. :raritywink:

Thanks for the messages, y'all. Nice way to start the day. :scootangel:

I can't imagine how you missed it, since you've commented on several of my posts in that series. I assumed you read them all.

Eh, a bunch of stuff came up on my feed during the radio silence. And by "a bunch of stuff", I mean hundreds. It could easily have gotten lost in the shuffle, cos I weren't reading all of 'em, matey, no chance. :applejackunsure:

Anyway, I have indeed read it now. Will leave a comment soon enough, but still digesting the contents. At the very least: Thanks for the post! I'm blushing right now.
