The frigid wind howled and the ice tried to dig its way into her skin as she lay face down in the snow. That last hit had numbed her mind and stiffed her breath. Cold, she felt so cold from a chill beyond the frost and hail. The town bell rang, shaken by the roaring gales that snapped trees and shattered windows. The dread, the coolness slithering into her skin, the apathy to lay down and go to sleep; it was almost overpowering.
Beckoning, the urging of the wind chimes that her eyes were forced open. Wood covered fingers dug into the snow bank, clawing through it to find a purchase. She had to dig almost half a foot down to seize hold of what had been a street sign buried under the snow. The word around her was unnaturally dark and unnaturally white. The grim, spiraling walls of the snowstorm's eye were visible before, beside, and behind the street she was on. She was right in the thick of it, right at its core with them.
Her black eyes refocused on the mist shrouded, long limbed figures standing on the roof tops. One of them let out a shriek that made her want to block out her ears given the roaring winds it kicked up shattered glass for half the block; whipping up the storm to a new flurry.
She should have been home. Should have sat by a warm fireplace with her children while swapping stories with her brother and sister-in-law. They'd decorate the hearth, bake treats in the kitchen, and be in bed by midnight to look forward to the present swapping tomorrow. Instead she was fifty kilometers away in the eye of a blizzard-hurricane combination, and fighting for her life, because if she faltered....
Eyes glared and a new wave of magic banished away the cold for awhile longer, a green glow forcing the monsters to cover their eyes and faltered back as she levitated up to their level.
