So I've been busting my squid nut now for two weeks... · 11:22pm Apr 4th, 2019
I'm officially helplessly addicted to Splatoon 2. And surprisingly not terrible at it, though I'm still far from great.
Some general observations and personal thoughts:
- The communications options with other players in Ranked and Regular matches leave a lot to be desired. The only options you have are two directional buttons which send out "Booyah!" and "This way!" (and that one sends out "Ouch!" if you've been splatted). That leaves two buttons that don't have any associated chat options, and there's so much that could be done there. For example:
"Go ahead!"
"Nice shot!"
"Thank you!"
Those would be useful chat macros to have. Especially "Go ahead!", which would prevent miscommunication like what I had to deal with today in Clam Blitz.
It didn't take me long to figure out that I stink on offense in Clam Blitz, so I shifted my strategy to defense, tending goal. It's definitely my niche, and on a good day I can completely shut down every attempt to score on our basket. Of course, inevitably I'm going to pick up clams while I'm goalkeeping, and I generally toss those in the direction of a passing teammate, who collects them and moves on.
So today, I'm tending goal, and one of my teammates comes up to me and starts throwing clams at me. I pass them back at him. He tosses them back at me. This goes on for a bit, and then he starts insistently spamming "This way!" I had literally no way to communicate to him that I was tending goal and urging him to go on ahead with his Splat Roller and score some points for our team.
- So I've tested out a bunch of different weapons both in the test room and Turf War, and I'm committed to playing a shooter. I'm best with a Splattershot, with Dualies as my second favorite. Right now I've got a Splattershot with Suction Bomb sub and that special that does the big floating bubbles. I'm really hoping to find a Splattershot with Suction Bombs and the Baller, because that's my idea loadout.
- I'm TRASH at Splat Zones. My best game is Tower Control. Clam Blitz, I'm fairly good at goaltending but can't play offense worth shit, so I've decided to own that. I'm determined to reach Rank X in Clam Blitz without ever scoring a single point. (I'm at C+ now, so that'll take a while.) Rainmaker...is kind of a mixed bag for me, but I'm equally good (or bad) at offense AND defense there.

There is no splattershot with Suction bombs and baller. The Sheldon’s Picks were the last chance to get a new comp, but it never happened. We got a lot of high rate of fire shooters instead.

Ah well, I'll make do with other specials. It'd be nice if we could *choose* subs and specials instead of being forced to buy *sets*...
Clam Blitz is, in my opinion, the worst with randoms because of the lack of communication. Really wish they'd put something - literally anything useful - on the two unused D-pad buttons.
Heck, it'd have been 10 minutes of work to just let us pick 4 shouts from a menu in the lobby and assign one to each D-pad button. It is an oversight.

See, the problem with that is it'd lead to everyone just picking the same loadout. Gotta fight that Complacent Gaming Syndrome.

Eh, I don't think it would, not everybody likes to play this kind of thing the exact same way. I've experimented with every weapon available to me and haven't been satisfied with anything but the Splattershot and the Dualies, but look at all the players that go with Rollers and Sloshers. It really depends on whether you like to charge ahead and steamroll everything in your path or if you're more careful. Also, even the subs and special weapons are depending-on-your-style. I'm pretty good with Suction Bombs but I also LOVE Curling Bombs. I'm NOT as big a fan of Sprayers, Ink Walls, and Mines. Other players are really good at using those effectively. Then there's the specials, which have such variety and applicability...
I mean, what it boils down to is not everybody would want to use the same loadout because every weapon has its own niche.
