There is a great disturbance in the force in a galaxy far, far away. For today, actor Peter Mayhew who played Chewbacca in many of the original Star Wars movies has been confirmed to have died. His death came on April 30, but news has just now broken out about it, he was 74 years old.

A minor actor and a London native, Mayhew landed the part of Han Solo's hairy sidekick when George Lucas needed someone who could be taller than Darth Vader. Like Darth Vader, Mayhew was the in suit actor but did not provide the voice. That honor belonged to sound designer Ben Burtt. However, he had passed the torch to a successor in 2015 with The Force Awakens, the role being taken over by Joonas Suotamo (who played Chewie in Solo: A Star Wars Story and will be playing him in the upcoming The Rise of Skywalker).

There's no denying that Chewbecca was just as much as a staple of the Star Wars franchise as Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia, Darth Vader, and many others. Though he never spoke a single line of regular English (even translated) he played the part of a sidekick to Han and a travel companion well. And Mayhew's performance and career became synoymous with the character.

Mayhew now joins departed cast members such as Carrie Fisher to become one with the force, he will be missed.
