Headed to EFNW (and Considering Hosting a Panel ??) · 5:58am Jun 13th, 2021

EFNW is back on for in-person events! And now that I live in Oregon (long story I'll blog about later), I can actually attend! Just signed up, registration is hella cheap compared to a lot of other cons I've seen. In case you hadn't heard about it, you can check the site here.

So while poking around the site, I noticed that panel applications are still open for a few more days. I know it's a long shot and honestly I'm super up in the air about it, but I think it'd be really fun to host a panel. I was on a panel with Wanderer D for PonyFest Online about Writing Sensitive Topics™, and despite the connection errors and shitty mic audio I had a lot of fun. It's cool to talk about something you're passionate about on a platform like that, y'know? Made me feel all ~official~.

Vain as it is, I'd love to do something like that again. The problem is like... it feels super duper presumptuous of me to assume anyone would even care about a panel hosted by me? Like the other one had Wanderer frickin' D there too so it was like a legit thing, but who even the h*ck is this Scampy girl? Like 99.9% of con-goers would have no idea who I was and the other 0.01% wouldn't give a fuck. That's what my brain keeps telling me, anyway. I try not to take everything it impulsively says as the infallible truth though, which leads to me posting this blog.

So my question to y'all is, do you think there'd be enough interest in what I have to say for me to run my own panel? I'm aware that asking my own followers is gonna get me a biased answer but I'm not exactly sure where else to ask lol <_<

As far as topics go, I had a few in mind--of course I'd only pick one, though it's possible there's some overlap here:

  • Writing about sensitive topics such as trauma/self-harm/general angst (same as the PonyFest Online panel, maybe a bit more specific).
  • A panel about my experiences running a successful writing contest.
  • A panel about writing human female characters. It's no secret that EqG fanfics often have some pretty awful female characterization compared to MLP fics, for a few reasons.

I'm open to other ideas. I've literally not thought any of this through at all.

So yeah that's where I'm at! Any and all thoughts are appreciated🙏. Even if I don't wind up applying, or I do and don't get accepted, I'll still have a ton of fun at the con. For those of you also planning to attend, if you wanna keep an eye out for me, look for the girl in the Wallflower cosplay, who else?

Bless up for vanity \o/

I demand pictures when this happens! :flutterrage: :rainbowlaugh:

As for your question, I would say go for it. I think you bring some interesting and important topics to talk about.

I can see it now... you on a plastic chair with a megaphone in your hands and your feet on a table that has a banner saying

SunFlower is canon!

Looking forward to hopefully meeting you there! I would definitely attend your panel, as I enjoyed the one that you and WandererD did.

I like the idea of learning about your writing contest. Even if many people wouldn't run one themselves, it would be informative to understand the process and what goes into setting one up, managing it and judging the entries.
A panel on writing female characters would be great, too. As you said, it isn't always done well. Having the female perspective would help many writers.
Good luck!

Oh, I'm sure you've got boatloads of interesting stuff to discuss, all around . Good luck, and most importantly, have fun!

Looking forward to it no matter what the panel is Scampy

You know, i doubt half the people won’t recognize you, or at least your name. You under value yourself!

That's like my superpower

I've always wondered. What is "Scampy"? Is it "Scampy" as in shrimp scampi? :rainbowderp:

Or maybe I'm just hungry.

Also to answer your question I think it'd be great if you could do a panel, I'm excited for you! Although I am too far from Seattle to possibly attend. nvm I'm going too :derpytongue2:

My suggestion would be a sort of comedic debate panel where you (and a friend who is in on it) will argue as to whether Sunflower is canon. You are on the "pro" side, your friend on the "anti" side. It could be semi-scripted and primarily for entertainment purposes.

But in my opinion the panel topic isn't even that important. Just be yourself, talk about something you're passionate about, and everything will fall into place.

I second this. Reminds me of the your waifu is trash table at bronycon.

I've always wondered. What is "Scampy"? Is it "Scampy" as in shrimp scampi?

Everyone asks who is Scampy, what is Scampy, but no one asks how is Scampy...

You could talk about children shows, or any TV show, on how they portray homosexual relationships and the Pro's and Con's of it.

Use examples from other shows like Steven Universe, The Legend of Korra, Star vs. the Forces of Evil and many others on what they had to go through to just have certain episodes aired and not get canceled. Provide some personal insight on what is was like growing up and being shown that being gay is normal on TV. Perhaps interview some other folks if they have been positively or negatively effected by watching these shows at any age. Finally you can show how far TV shows have come and what the future may hold for other forms of media.

do a panel about killing fuckers

Ow sick not sure I can go but hope you have fun

Holy hell, we’re in the same time zone now!?

Shock aside, i wish you luck on your panel for EFNW. Wish I can go, but I’m not quite that independent just yet. XD

Put in a good word for me <3

What topic did you end up submitting. Also I'd like to bump my previous question: 5534532

5535351
Writing about difficult topics. It's something I've put a lot of thought and effort into with my own writing and I think I have a lot of ideas worth sharing.

As for my name, it comes from a boat! When I was a lil baby bean, my grandfather had a dingy little sailboat. It was named Li'l Scampy and he taught me how to sail in it when I was a kid. I love that boat and its cute name so I made it my name too \o/

That's a cool backstory!

...in this year's yearbook superlatives, the honour of "Most Likely To Be Wallflower Blush (Undercover)" goes to Scampy!
