I don't have time to write a decent review, so let me just say, Read Applejack Digs a Hole. It's a very sad story and a very happy story, sentimental without being the least bit sappy. If you want to know why I like it so much, you can read the parts on sentiment in Jedi Master Ed's Satire, Sex and Sentiment, and pretend they're about this story.
Plus, the writing is great! Precise, lush, evocative, immersive, true, and transparent. Style so good I can barely see it. I wish I could write like that. I don't have the courage to stretch a simple plot out to 9000 words, because I don't have faith in my ability to find enough in my characters, and a way to express it concretely instead of just saying it, to fill all that space.

For some reason, it was already in my highest-priority bookshelf, which makes it just as likely to be read by me as any other bookshelf, which is not at all unless my condition turns around.
