Maria and Emily share a strong sisterly bond. Maria rescues Emily from an animal attack at the beginning of the series, and they fight together with Maria's brother Brandon against a serial killer on Emily's ninth birthday, which happens to fall on Halloween. It's heavily implied Emily suffers from PTSD as a result, but her natural childhood ability to bounce back quickly helps stave it off. This picture is part of the third short story leading up to a longer fourth one. The third takes place a year after both incidents in 1998. It's pretty much Maria trying to make up for everything Emily had to go through. Maria's extreme empathy, sympathy, and compassion help Em along with the healing process. Their relationship was the catalyst for their penance abilities, and their experiences are reflected in their merciful attitude towards combat and society as a whole.
