So My Writing Style Needs A Little Work · 3:08am Jul 16th, 2022
It has come to my attention while reading over a few of my stories, that I have a habit of telling instead of showing. It was explained to me that Show/Don't tell is something I desperately need to get a grasp on so that my stories do not suffer. At first I didn't realize what they were talking about until I read through my stories where I had a single paragraph that told the reader about the event that occured, instead of dedicating time and effort into showing the reader what happened instead.
As result I've realized that a lot of my chapters for fics are woefully short and could have been made much longer and more enjoyable if I had stuck to describing the events occurring instead of taking the lazy way out and telling what happened. Not sure if anyone else needed this but I figured you guys and gals could learn from my mistake. I'll Include a terrible, simple example below.
Tell: Anon and his friends went to the park.
Show: Anon and his friends took a lush but well walked trail to the park that seemed only a short distance away.
It's terrible I know, but it does what I need it to do in the fact that some of my stories do this with longer paragraphs and they just sit there and explain what happened with a few sparse details, when I could turn it into a good six or seven paragraphs showing the event with explicit detail. I don't know if I'm coming off correct about this, but this is how I've interpreted it.
