A strange book written in a script not linked to any known language is given to Moon Dancer by a mysterious stallion with dark spectacles and a charming smile. Wary of what lay within yet curious nonetheless, Moon Dancer enlists the aid of her old friend Twilight Sparkle in deciphering the script and unlocking the truth behind the book's origins.

What follows is a detailed account of the endeavor and its tragic and terrifying conclusion, penned by the broken mare who survived to tell the tale.

Behind Celestia's graceful smile and kind eyes, secrets are hidden with a thousand years of practice. The whispered legends of her depravity hide a dark grain of truth, hidden in the mists of time: the clash with Nightmare Moon left her with scars that will never heal.

This was written before Season 4: it's in a Season 3 universe.
An eighth chapter, by Icebox Froggie, is on its way, and will be added to the story at some point.

Twilight had never questioned the nature of the Tree of Harmony. To her at least, it stood as a sentinel, a silent guardian watching over Equestria and keeping disharmony at bay.

She soon starts to have questions and misgivings when she inadvertently witnesses the horrifying fate of hers and the rest of her friend's twisted doppelgängers. Did something happen to the Tree of Harmony, or was it always this way?

Twilight aims to resolve this mystery once and for all. Little does she realize that this mystery goes far deeper—the truth far more terrifying than she can imagine.

Will she be able to solve this nightmarish mystery with her sanity intact, or will she surrender and be lost to madness?

After some deliberation I chose to put a Crossover tag as the whole story uses many assets from several stories in the Cthulhu Mythos (most of them written by authors other than Lovecraft).

Years after the Stable Dweller's journey to restore Equestria the world is still slowly recovering. Many parts of the world remain radioactive Wasteland despite the efforts of the NCR. In the far flung northeast region around the former city of Detrot the land remains a harsh, violent place. Living in a secluded mountain valley at the edge of this region, Longwalk is a colt ignorant of the larger Wasteland. His tribe has lived in isolation for generations, and he knows nothing of the world beyond the ten miles surrounding his remote mountain village.

All of that is about to change. Dragging a friend along to explore beyond the boundaries his tribe's laws allow, Longwalk makes a startling discovery; one that prompts a journey of his own out into the Wasteland with a mysterious unicorn filly at his side. Before he knows it Longwalk is caught in a dangerous web of Wasteland politics, powerful pre-war organizations, ancient death-filled ruins, and a growing cadre of unusual companions... each with secrets of their own.

For one of them, forever is a very real thing, and an impossibility for the other. But Discord is a master of the impossible. It's his gift. And his curse.

"Beyond the fact that this is excellently written, it's a crossroads where sweet meets hellish. So many stories confront Twilight outliving her friends. Few if any ask, 'But what if Fluttershy outlives them all?' And I stress all. Part of why this story hits so well is that I've seen two diametrically opposed readings of it and it manages to support both at the same time. On one hand, it's a poignant and tragic love story as Discord desperately tries to keep his love alive and she fights back with just as much force to have him accept the inevitable. On the other hand, it's showing the most toxic relationship possible as Discord forces Fluttershy to endure it all - even as she begs him to stop - because he can't deal with not having her in his life. I know my read on the story, but it's fascinating that it manages to be both a beautiful romance and a relationship horror story all at once. There are many rules to a good horror film. Most ponies learn them with time and experience.

Twilight never did. Now, trapped in a desolate inn at the end of a long driveway, far from help, she will learn of them. Or, at least, one of them. The one Rarity, her only surviving friend, insists is keeping Twilight alive.

To everyponies misfortune, Twilight has questions, and fleeing in terror like she should will not get her the answers.

Bittersweet has had problems sleeping for as long as she can remember. Unable to function properly in the workings of a normal adult life, she spends her days at the Manehattan Psychiatric Hospital trapped between the different states of her affliction. But when Equestria is suddenly destroyed at the peak of its war against the Zebra Empire, Bittersweet is forced to deal with the conditions of a harsh new world.

Morning Star is a semi-normal pony, well, as normal as it can get for the wasteland. But, as Star is met with his friends, an unstoppable string of events occur. Read along as you hear the stories of how the the Ministry of Astronomical Study was created.
