Seriously think about it! It would be an amazing Pokemon region. Australia's sheer biodiversity, varying environments, unique wildlife, and iconic landmarks would make for a great game. I also find it very funny to imagine this being the most challenging pokemon region to date, since pretty much everything that lives in actual Australia is out to kill you. I could totally see wild pokemon in this game being hyper aggressive and extremely strong, to the point that your starter pokemon will almost automatically faint in the first non-scripted battle you have to fight.

Additionally, a parody of Steve Irwin would obviously be the region's professor or champion, or possibly both, and would be the guy who gives you your starter pokemon.

We're talking about an entire continent. Why limit it to one professor? Have a Head Proffessor based off David Attenborough, and each proffessor under him based on various documentary hosts, and each one is studying the way different pokemon adapt to different environments.

Steve Irwin for Proffessor in the Far North (between QLD and NT), specialising in the Rainforest , where Crocodiles are more common (Mangrove Totodile would be adorable).

On top of that, have a mechanic where Pokémon from different environments perform better in their natural regions and poorly in ones that are too far removed. For example, a Rainforest Pokémon that's used to high humidity won't do well in regions based off Alice Springs or Perisher, and only performs at a standard level in areas based off Brisbane, Sydney, etc (populated, coastal, bushland).

Let the player choose their starting region, and if not that, have them start somewhere like the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

All the Pokemon should be deadly and venomous spiders, except for the deadly and venomous cone snails, and the agonizing, deadly and venomous box jellyfish. Oh, and the deadly, venomous snakes, of course. Basically, deadly and venomous everything. Even the Pokeballs should be venomous. And filled with spiders. Spiders everywhere. So. Many. Spiders.

And, yeah, a crocodile-type Pokemon, too. Sure. But filled with spiders.
