If you are not yet of official drinking age, leave. I mean it. There may be sensitive material that may do harm to- ah, who am I kidding. :ajsleepy:

So. We all know that both drinking and smoking have not only been an influential part of human history and have not only shaped the Western culture, but have also been essential for many writers, including Vonnegut, Tolkien, Twain, Joyce, Shaw... do I need to carry on?

This is the official thread for discussing your drinking/smoking preferences. What is your favourite drink? Do you make it yourself or do you have it made? Does it depend on the time of day or the mood or is it irrelevant? Do you have your drink straight or on the rocks? How much do you prefer to drink? And, most importantly, how does it influence your writing?

The same goes for smoking. Do you prefer cigarettes, cigars, pipe, or something else? How much do you prefer to smoke? How does smoking influence your writing and your characters?

For me, well, you know it already: I can't imagine a day without tobacco and I can't write without whisky. (While writing An Island, Two Mares and a Bottle of Rum, I actually drank rum and gin.) I feel that both alcohol consumption and smoking have shaped my stories and characters into what they are.

By the Official Josh Proclamation, I deem this thread... OPEN!

I like Bourbon (Jim Beam) and I smoke Canadian Classic cigarettes. Though, sometimes when I write I like to crack out a bottle of Merlot (Something a bit higher end) and enjoy a nice bit of cheese on the side.

All class. All the time.

Hmm, sounds interesting. I don't really like Bourbon, but I think that is because it is so different from Scotch, of which I have a particular fondness.:twilightsmile:
I smoke cigarettes only when I'm outside and don't have time; at home, I prefer a Peterson pipe.

Oh, and it's an honour to see you in our little cosy group.

Aww, thanks, dude (Or, dudette?)

I only smoke outside too. I only like Bourbon because its cheap here in Canadia.

In an Instant and Fire & Rain I wrote with a glass of E&J XO brandy. For my current project, Wind and Stone, I prefer a Whiskey Old Fashioned. Take a sugar cube, muddle it with 3 dashes of angostura bitters, add 2 shots of rye whiskey (your choice) and stir with ice. You can also add club soda to fill it out a bit if you like.

Old Fashioned is the only drink I ever mix. Only I do not like rye: I make it with Scotch. Try it out: you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I recently went to a wine + liquor tasting; I had a rather delightful smooth rye bourbon that just made the whole thing pleasant. Good bourbon is worth it; though it is very different from Scotch.

My normal drinking is IPAs. I find that when I'm sober I either overthink my prose or just can't convince myself that anyone will want to read anything I write. So I always have a couple before I start. As Hemingway said: Write drunk, edit sober.

I used to smoke; quit using electronic cigarettes. They're nifty, but I have even used them since last December. (about the same time I got into ponies...)

Electronic cigarettes - what's the catch? I hear it's all the rage nowadays. :rainbowhuh:

I know I'm seventeen, but I WANT IN!!!:flutterrage:

I usually drink albani/ slots pilsner when writing, but sometimes I drink what I call an "Irish banana split." Take some cold cocoa add irish cream liqueur and then some pizang ambon.

For smoking, It's Benson an Hedges when I can afford it, if not i'll smoke filter cigars.

It's only for private consumption. Also we are very relaxed about alcohol.

Think of totally drunk college students, but a couple of years earlier, but then again, they stop being drunkards earlier too.

It sounds very much like legalising weed. "For private consumption". :ajbemused:

As for smoking, i ussually go for Riverside cigars, the kind of cigars you get for 50 per 8 euro's, their cheap as fuck and they smoke nicely as an everyday smoke, nothing to complain about yet nothing to praise them for.
As for drinking, i have my own selection of beer (hertog jan Karakter, Grolsch Krachtig Kanon) but when it comes to whiskey, i don't have a lot of experience there but i do love the wooden taste of Jameson.
When it comes to other alcoholic drinks, i always take em pure.

Wine.
i really like red wine, my father has taught me how to drink it.
You take a sip of terrible cheap wine, then you wash it around your mouth, coming to the conclusion that this really is terrible wine, then you swallow, shudder and take another sip.
Lovely.

1949095 different chemicals. Still nicotine, but no tar. (there's some other stuff in there though.) They're available in flavors, including tobacco flavor.

Biggest appeals are: you can smoke anywhere. Unlike tar, the stuff doesn't linger and stick to things and smell like shit three hours later. It's basically water vapor. So you could smoke in a restaurant or casino or bar or bus...

second advantage is you can smoke a tiny bit and put it away, which makes it easier to cut back on your total intake. It's a bit cheaper too most of the time.

1950215 You forgot to pretentiously pretend there's a lot of different interesting flavors going on there. You talk about note of oak and vanilla, how the finish reminds you of spring flowers or citrus, how it smells like elderberries.

Whatever you do, don't say it tastes like grapes and feet.

Oh i have not forgotten those, its just that we drank cheap red wine.
I have learned how to drink red wine as in how to get all the flavors out of it, basicly i have learned how to taste.
But that bit about terrible wine is our bit of humor when we drink said terrible wine with a smile.

If i really want to go towards grapes and feet i would consume a certain drink made by wine makers that contains all the twigs, bad grapes and everything that they couldn't use for the making of wine.
I have forgotten the name of it but it has an high alcoholic percentage.

Yeah k.

Personally, I drink vodka. Mostly because it's quick and easy. Smoking is whatever is sitting around, as I am also poor as hell. Which one of you wants to volunteer to teach me about liquor and tobaccos when I Have the money for it?

Don't know what you're talking about... :trollestia:
But, for fics like the one I think you're thinking about, never trust wine. Whisky all the way. Yes, don't make it a double and consume in small sips, but it still should be whisky, IMO. Jura, Bladnoch, and Whyte&Mackay are absolute faves for fics like that one. :raritywink:

1949326 HOLY FUCK! Your drinking laws are even lower than german drinking laws... damn...
I though Germany was the lowest with beer and wines with 16 year.

As for my favorite drink, I am more of a Long Island Ice Tea guy, though I don't say no to a good whiskey or red wine.
Otherwise I drink beer. What did you expect? I am german. But I am picky with it. I don't drink water like Heineken. If I am given the option between several beer, I will pick one brewed after german recipe.

As for smoking, I do cigarettes, but only when I am drinking. I am a so called Partysmoker. I only smoke with other people.
If I smoke alone, it's only Hookah, because they taste good.

2039636 Heineken isn't water. Water everywhere is offended by that statement.

So you're a strict 'purity law' beer drinker?

2040121

I am so sorry, Water. If without you there wouldn't be beer. I am feel so terrible for calling you Heineken.

Well not strict, but the 'Purity law' is a big bonus.

2040169 I've found that it limits what you can do. While sometimes this encourages creativity, in this case it's become more of an obstacle. ON this side of the world, we've begun to experiment more freely.

Not all results have been sexy, but there's some good stuff happening.

You should try beer from Svaneke brew house. They make the best beers in denmark (Which is basically like germans when thinking of beer culture.)
