Has anyone played the mystery dungeon spin off games before?

I have. My favorite of the series so far is Explorers of Sky. I'm trying to play through Gates to Infinity now, but... well, PMD isn't the most hard core gaming experience out there, but this feels really watered down even then. One mission at a time, one speed to dialog, and story seems off. Kinda hard to get into.
