Twilight Sparkle had always regarded immortality as both a blessing and a curse. It was like chains of gold, gilded shackles. Seemingly enticing, but in reality, a grasp of which you cannot break free. Twilight missed her children. She missed her husband.

She missed her friends.

There were pictures of them, of course, countless photos and historical paintings and memorials and glass windows. A picture can speak a thousand words, but a memory priceless. She cherished their memories.

Sometimes she felt often like a star in the night sky. A soft, glowing glimmer of fiery aura burning valiantly against the unknown abyss above, a constant guiding light, leading her people through the darkness.

Bright, and lonely, in the way that only things that lived forever were.

Twilight Sparkle has always respected the laws of science and magic. It's a respect that got her a scholarship to SGU, where she formed a small but comfortable group of friends and has received top grades in her two years there. It's a life that makes sense.

With her final year beginning and a special instruction from the Princess to bond with a fellow pupil, Twilight has enough to fill her life and her mind. It doesn't make sense that she should have recurring dreams about a mysterious mare, that this mare seems eerily familiar despite being a total stranger, or that she can recall the dreams with unusual clarity.

Twilight has questions about Equestria and about herself, and the answers could reshape her perception of both. She begins her research with a central question:

What lies beyond the edge of a dream?

Princess Twilight Sparkle has a vast knowledge of different magics, including magical afflictions, and so she's come to expect, when the truly unusual things crop up, to find letters from Equestria's hospitals showing up at the castle. And every time, she's dropped everything to help one of her subjects.

Luster Dawn is taking her first hospital trip with her mentor, to visit a sick pegasus filly. It's Nightmare Night, and the princess is bringing the celebration to the filly, alongside her weekly dose of a potion used to treat her illness. Luster doesn't know what precisely she's sick with, or why Princess Twilight even wants Luster to come at all, but she's assured her it's not contagious, or at least there's no risk of unicorns or alicorns catching it.

The longer she's around the filly, however, the more this disease looks familiar. But the book she saw it in was folklore. Just an old pony tale. There's no such thing as bat ponies.
