Inspired by a piece of artwork by Jaaaaaaaz, and Stephen King's magnum opus "The Dark Tower," what follows is an alternate telling of a familiar tale.

For one-thousand years, Princess Celestia has fought a war of attrition against the armies of the Red, but now the rules are about to change, and Celestia must rely on her sheltered prized pupil and a living remnant of a secret order she once believed lost forever.

The one-thousandth anniversary of the Summer Sun Celebration is approaching, a time when Twilight Sparkle believes Equestria's worst nightmare will finally be realised. While she strives to warn the kingdom of impending disaster, the peace of Canterlot is thrown further into disarray by the arrival of an earth pony carrying totems of fierce power, and an even more terrible legacy.

Darker mysteries from Canterlot's past bubble to the surface, as Twilight spins headlong towards a destiny that will mean their salvation, or their damnation.

And the Tower is closer...

Time is long and time is short,
how long must I wait?
I sit and cry and bleed and die,
until she is awake.

Another dusk, another dawn.
Will it ever end?
To beat the pain, remove a stain,
I sure could use a friend.

Trapped in the endless halls of Tartarus, forced to listen to the endless screams of rage and regret; an artist grins.

Royalty had put him here, and royalty would let him out.

A deal here, a concession there, and openings would appear.

A crack could break a marble statue, a drop of poison could ruin a meal, the smallest of errors could bring down anything.

This story is a sequel to Sleepless

Bat pony district of Canterlot. It's not a place shown on postcards. In the caves under the town, everything looks different. Life, death, morality... Everything is different, except one thing. Crime.

Canterlot. It’s not Manehattan or Detrot, where poor, little ponies commit their little crimes. In Canterlot, crimes are so big, they go unnoticed. Ponies can’t comprehend them; just like an ant can’t comprehend a pony passing by.

But somepony made a mistake. Small crime; a broken body on the pavement.

Scootaloo and Archer both saw many things in their lives. But this trip will take them to places they wished they didn't know.

He learns much and more in the four months the voyage lasts, but at the same time, he loses something he once held dear.

It matters not where he goes, for even here, the sky is white.
