Based on many other stories I've read, I've come to assume that buck is a term for a younger male - older than a colt, younger than a stallion. Blame it on these stories I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
8035883 ...I think you've been misreading a lot of the stories you've been reading, then. Because the only common usage of "buck" around here is either "kicking with the back legs" or "slang term for pony sex". I have literally never seen a story on this site (except yours) make the mistake of using "buck" in the context of "male equine".
In any case, as I said, male ponies are either colts or stallions. Bucks are male deer.
8035909 You might want to check out the Fallout:Equestria-series then. 'Buck' is a term commonly used in both the original and (for instance) Murky Number Seven to describe male equines (and kicking things and intercourse, of course).
I realize calling them that might be incorrect, but fanficition about a cartoon might be the wrong place to look for zoological correctness.
