Pastel Shades has the most boring job in Equestria: telling new parents what color their children are. It's not a pleasant job, but it's a necessary job, and it's the little reminders that make it tolerable.

To tell you the truth, I haven't really decided on her cutie mark yet; it's exact design wasn't really relevant to the story. ^^"

However, a friend and I will be drawing both Pastel Shades and Bright Pasture later this month; we'll be deciding on final details then - and yes, the butterfly is one of the things we are considering for her mark. :D I'm glad you like it!

Thank you muchly!

That was SO cute. Bright is precious.

she was... admittedly, proud of that one... but that's why she wants him to have it.

What's with the sudden tense shift.

I was expecting this to be a comedy. The MLP Wikia will teach you new words for all sorts of colours.

My bad, I must've missed that. Been experimenting with present tense for another story. I'll fix it right away, thanks.

And it started as a comedy, but... sorta changed as I was writing it. Excluded the comedy tag for that reason.

I'm glad you think so! I always felt like I've had trouble with writing good characters (and granted, in this case, children are sometimes easier to write), so I'm happy that I've heard positive things about both Pastel and Bright now. Thanks for reading!

That would certainly be an odd talent to have. Also hopefully no one explains that the sun is basically more dangerous than lava by several magnitudes until a few years have passed.

Something that makes everypony happy.

Makes me wonder if his coat color aversion is a deeper identity issue than just the connection to lava - perhaps he too has parents that fought over his coloring.
