Assuming the image is on derpibooru, you can just give the image number. In the case of this image, I believe that would be either #2294554 or #2256246.
Whichever one it is, add the line "Cover art is cropped from #(insert number here) on Derpibooru" to the story long description, and people can find it themselves...and since you posted no direct link (which is the actual rule violation), you won't get banned.

If that's the case, then how is anyone supposed to give proper crediting for nsfw pieces? Also, one would assume that links to nsfw content within a mature rated story would be okay, lest there be a double standard.
Also, linking an nsfw artist page containing nsfw content seems to be the same thing as an image link, if worse.
There are ways to get around direct links, such as tag numbers and such, which would be better for everyone considering there is no link to nsfw content and there is a link by proxy to the saucy sauce.
I enjoyed the story regardless, so good work.

This was a rule I remember plenty of people having an issue with back when it was first implemented. (I went under a different moniker back then.) Mature stories should be fine, they said. But Knighty was resilient, would not back down on this policy.
Not too long ago, I saw Dr Sharaz Jek get banned for a few days when he released his story Fluttering into Spike The Dragon's Heart with a direct link to his saucy pic. So it does still happen. But at the end of the day, its Knighty who makes the rules, best we can do is follow them if we want to use this awesome site.
Edit: Recommend poking Eldorado. He is of the older guard and may be able to give some more insight.
