Greetings, folks. This is Mr. J back with another movie review for today. This afternoon, I will be reviewing “Bad Boys” from 1995. This movie was certainly interesting and fun to watch! I remember my dad having the dvds of the first two movies of the series in his wardrobe, but I never sat down to watch those movies with him. That’s why, years later, I took the opportunity to watch this movie myself for the first time.

“Bad Boys” is about two undercover cops solving the mystery behind the heroine theft from their police headquarters. They also have to protect their only witness to the murder crime committed by the same drug lord. Will the dynamic duo catch the killer and bring him to justice?

Yeah, I have to admit that this is one of Michael Bay’s most underrated works. It may not be the best or perfect when it comes to storytelling, but it has a decent plot, awesome action, and hilarious dialogue.

The acting was absolutely superb. Martin Lawrence and Will Smith have fantastic chemistry through their acting skills which made this movie even more enjoyable to watch. Their characters bring out both the best and…the worst out of each other in a comedic fashion.

Like I said, the dialogue is just hilarious to see. You can tell Michael Bay and the writing team had so much fun making these characters talk and act like assholes—professional, caring, passionate assholes at that. And that leads to my next point: the dialogue feels mostly organic—making every single turn of events feel believable.

The violence, the explosions, and the vulgarity are quite executed well with considerable restraint which is a rare trait in Bay’s directing style. Often, he would go all out in making so many explosions and action scenes to the point where it feels rather empty and over-the-top. But here, he uses these elements just enough to convey the idea of what his version of a rated-R movie would look like.

Now, if there are some things I didn’t necessarily like about this film, it would be the antagonists and a couple scenes regarding Marcus and Mike’s choice of action.

The main villain, Fouchet, feels very one-note and generic. He’s the type of villain you would find in the Fast & Furious franchise where those villains will commit a series of crimes, say some generic lines a drug lord would say, act unhinged or crazy, and run away like a coward.

I’m aware that writing in-depth villains isn’t usually Bay’s style, but a few lines from Fouchet suggesting he came from a rather unfortunate beginning would have been nice, in my opinion. That’s all.

There were certain scenes I felt like were a waste of time and didn’t need to be in the movie. One of which was the part where Marcus was overhearing his wife talking with Mike while they were at home and getting angry over the impression Mike was sleeping with her.

And the fact they were fighting outside the house while two of Fouchet’s goons were watching was so stupid and very risky. They were lucky two of their associates were able to arrest those goons before they got hurt.

And I didn’t like how they had to cuff Julie on the steering wheel to keep her secure. Um, guys, you are aware that her best friend’s murderer is out for her, right? Leaving her alone in the car was honestly a stupid decision on their part because that left her vulnerable to any one of his goons who might shoot at her from a distance.

Lastly, another scene I hated was how the villain was killed off at the end. It was incredibly satisfying to see that prick get his just comeuppance, but I really wish it was Julie who shot those bullets of justice. Not only would she avenge the death of her friend but also be able to save Will from getting shot.

Why do main characters always have to have the good stuff while the side characters who had far worse problems and trauma get sidelined?! I hate that in movies and TV shows! But whatever, the good thing is that they stopped the bad guy, and the day is saved. I just wish they had done it differently.

Overall, this movie is pretty good and a great start to a potentially good franchise. As I stated, the movie has entertaining action, a decent plot, hilarious dialogue, good characters, and satisfying explosions.

The only negatives are a couple of questionable scenes that had poor execution, the main characters making a few dumb decisions for the sake of the plot, and a missed opportunity to have a side character get a more satisfying conclusion to their revenge arc.

With that said, I will rate “Bad Boys” a solid 9/10!

Peace!
