    Shipping Sunset Shimmer with Sci-Twi

    I. A Tale of Two Shows When I wrote the few pieces of fiction I have set in the Equestria Girls side continuity, I wrote them from the assumption that Sunset Shimmer was heterosexual and passionate (though at first sexually-inexperienced, due to her youth at the time of entering the Humanoid world). Given this, my unfinished prequel (An Equestrian Gentlemare) was chiefly

    Generic Likely Equestrian Future

This assumes a vanilla Equestrian future, rather than the specific one of the Shadow Wars Story Verse, though some of the comments apply to my SWSV as well. Generally, the SWSV Equestria advances faster than this, as can be seen by reference to the noted story.

Twiluna Ship Tease in Friends Forever # 14 · 10:32pm Mar 29th, 2015

As you may have noticed, I ship Twilight Sparkle with Luna in my Shadow Wars Storyverse. There's a very specific reason I do this -- Twilight and Luna were once, in their Mortal Avatars during the Age of Wonders over four millennia ago, Dusk Skyshine and Moondreamer, who were husband and wife -- and Luna still remembers Dusk with love. I really doubted that anything like this would ever become even semi-canonical.

However, there's a scene in Friends Forever # 14 in which Luna casually mentions to Spike: "Twilight is [in her dream] almost finished re-alphabetizing the Canterlot Library. I couldn't forgive myself if I woke her up now. She's been having this dream once a months since she was a filly and she's never gotten past 'S' before. Some nights I just love to sit atop the stacks and watch her work." And she says the last part with an almost enraptured expression.

To which Spike replies: "Ummmm ... okay," with a slightly-shocked 'too much information' sort of look. "Was there a reason you woke me up, though."

"What? Oh, yes!" says Luna, as if she was just pulled out of a really pleasant daydream.

And serious exposition ensues.

The thing that surprised me about this exchange is that was very much the sort of conversation that the Shadow Wars Storyverse Luna might have had with Spike. My Luna has been attracted, at least in a friendly fashion, to Twilight even before she knew that Twilight was the reborn Dusk; ever since she noticed the filly Twilight star-gazing. Luna liked Twilight even when Luna was mostly lost to Nightmare, and she has loved her ever since she realized Twilight was Dusk, and Twilight led the Mane Six to free her from the Nightmare.

Luna is well aware of the obstacles, as shown in "A Meeting by Moonlight" and "Feeling Adrift." Luna's normally straight, Twilight seems to be straight, and Twilight doesn't actually remember being Dusk (though, after the events of "A Meeting by Moonlight," Twilight is well aware that she had been Dusk, that Dusk was married to Moondreamer, and that Luna remembers their earlier life together vividly and still loves her -- Twilight is romantically-inexperienced, not stupid).

Luna is also, in some ways, rather shy. Yes, she's a loud Large Ham, but much like Bulk Biceps, she uses this to cover for a certain fundamental insecurity as a Pony. She is very self-conscious about the fact that in an important sense she's not really a Pony, but rather a super-powerful alien being in Pony form; and she is very aware that her sister is both far more attractive and far more capable in normal social situations than herself.

This can lead Luna to behave in frightening ways when she likes somepony; either she'll be too aggressive and scare them off (as she did to some extent to Big Mac in "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance") or she will be too retiring, and just watch them longingly -- as she does sometimes to Twilight Sparkle. Spying on an innocent dream of Twilight being happy working is entirely within her behavioral possibilities.

This isn't the first time that the IDW series has implied that Luna has a high opinion of Twilight. As I noted before, in Reflections, Luna noted that Twilight reminds her of a younger Celestia -- and Celestia is the being whom Luna loves above all else. The implied compliment was very great -- and Twilight understood the implications.

I'll discuss the rest of the issue later -- including the obvious contradiction with canon about Dragons being rare and scary and not well understood by Equestrian Ponies. But I just thought I should mention the way in which the earlier part works well with my fanon. The story implies that Luna has some sort of crush on Twilight, or at the very least, wishes she could become a closer friend of her.

Luna also faces the problem that it's pretty clear that Twilight is straight.

I'm not really sure about my opinion of the comics.

Sometimes they generate stuff that fits with the setting the show has created and often add depth- Chrysalis' return, the Nightmare Rarity arc, heck, even some of the stuff about Starswirl's research into mirrors and other worlds, but then at other times they come up with some very strange, contradictory nonsense. Twice now they've had stories which would've been resolved instantly if Twilight being a princess meant anything. Apparently Princess Twilight has non power to order the arrest of bandits, or halt a construction company whose actions are aggravating another nation into declaring war.

Or just wreck the setting, like this Dragon Town thing, which makes no sense when applied to what the show tells us about dragons, or the story about Cadance and Shining Armor, which takes place in a pastiche of 80s' high school films. At least the characterization was good in that one, even if the setting was one hell of a headscratcher.

I wish everyone at Hasbro could decide on how humanlike they want the ponies to be. They go from eating grass on the pasture to walking upright. yeesh.

Ah well, this stuff is mostly buffet canon. You pick what you want and leave the rest. There's a lot of good worldbuilding, stories and ideas in the comics, but also a lot of stuff that doesn't fit.

I have to agree, Twilight lives surrounded by females, one of whom is a former super model, one is considered the most beautiful female in the world by the only male protagonist, and one who is apparently so hot she has to fend off male suitors, not to mention all three princesses, and she never, not once, shows romantic interest in any of them.

However she bumps into a tall pegasus stallion looking sharp in his royal guard armor and immediately goes doe eyed (before even actually going into the mirror and meeting his human counterpart).

Twilight is so straight, depicting her otherwise is almost like trying to make her an earth pony or a pegasus.

Also Luna seemed to show more interest in both Applejack and Fluttershy than she ever did to Twilight in Luna Eclipsed, if anything is to be drawn from the dialog. She was always very neutral to Twilight, not to mention in subsequent appearances she mostly just gives Twilight the stink eye.

This particular comic also ignores pretty much everything that's been established about dragons up to this point in the show itself, so kindda low in the credibility department.

Oh that IS a plot hole, but the rest of the comic is so lovingly put together that I'll jump through any number of hoops of head canon to accept it.

2922410

The way Dragon Town is possible is if Dragon culture drives out its failures -- often, genetic failures, Dragons who will never be able to develop properly or have enough power to win territories -- and Equestria is willing to take them in provided that they play nice. The dregs (the impolite name for them) lack most of their Draconic powers, and not much about healthy Dragon development can really be surmised from observing them.

Spike isn't a dreg. He's potentially an extremely powerful Dragon, as is obvious by his possession of magic and ability to breathe flame hot enough to melt tempered steel, when he's barely started his growth.

However she bumps into a tall pegasus stallion looking sharp in his royal guard armor and immediately goes doe eyed (before even actually going into the mirror and meeting his human counterpart).

That was a very clumsy Meet Cute, and what's worse is that the writers repeat the scene, again and again, with Pony and Humanoid Flash Sentry, as if they were less individuals who might possibly fall in love than particles being shot at each other in a magnetic accelerator.

But, yeah. Twilight's naturally straight in the Shadow Wars Storyverse. So's Luna. And yet ... in a past life, they loved each other very dearly.

Also Luna seemed to show more interest in both Applejack and Fluttershy than she ever did to Twilight in Luna Eclipsed, if anything is to be drawn from the dialog.

Luna particularly likes Applejack, and has ever since she (as Nightmare Moon) witnessed Applejack's heroics saving herself and Twilight from the ledge she'd just collapsed. But then, she's liked the Apple Clan for a long time -- she used to heavily recruit among them. However, if you remember how that episode turned out, Twilight was the one she ultimately trusted most, and who helped her most.

She was always very neutral to Twilight, not to mention in subsequent appearances she mostly just gives Twilight the stink eye.

That's particularly in Crystal Empire, and it's because Luna really wanted to have the chance to atone for the mistakes she originally made with Sombra.

It's a shame that Meghan and DHX staff don't consider it canon. There's a lot of interesting character development that could be a part of the show. Discord/CMC/Fluttershy relationship included.

On the other hand, I know the purpose for which the show would introduce a character like Mina -- to avoid having to resolve the Sparity arc -- by deciding that once he met "his own kind," he'd lose that silly childhood crush.

2923585
yeah, the writer of this comic already confirmed to not be a fan of Sparity
