Thoughts on The Fall Guy (2024)

This was fun. Not an all-time great, but still, a good and stylish way to kill two hours.

Thoughts on Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace

The last time I watched this movie, I was around eight years old, having rented it from Food City. I'm glad to have watched it again, and on the big screen to boot.

    Primal Jack

Found this image courtesy of Reddit. It was too good not to share. :pinkiehappy:

Speaking a little more seriously though, it's interesting to look at this and compare/contrast the two characters' designs and the respective art styles of their shows.

    I Am Back

Hey everyone. I'm sorry for being so quiet these past few days, but Internet connections were pretty crappy at both the hotel and at the convention, so I figured I'd just save the big response for when I finally got home and unpacked.

    My First Convention

I'd been meaning to put this up earlier, but well, better late than never.

Tomorrow and through Sunday, I'll be out of town - my dad and I are going to a convention over in Beckley. Dad's going to be vending a table there to try and sell some books.

Headcanons: Sci-Twi / Human Twilight · 2:48am Aug 13th, 2018

Well, this is the last batch of headcanons I managed to write up when I was on my trip. It's been fun posting these over the next week... now I just need to figure out what batch to work on next! XD

Anyway, here we go. These are the thoughts and ideas I've had for the human world's Twilight Sparkle.

Sci-Twi:

- Considering the big fancy house we glimpsed at the beginning of "Mad Twience" (plus all the technology she has in that shed XD) and the fact that she was attending a pretty fancy-looking private school, it's quite safe to say that the Sparkle family is rather well-set. XD I kind of see them as being an old family with money, but still enjoying working for a living. Twilight Velvet is a novelist and professional writer/editor with a love of adventure, while Night Light is a computer programmer or somesuch... it was he who got Twilight her first computer, and supported her interest in engineering and robotics.
- In regard to Twilight's parents... while two of my favorite story series on this site involve Sci-Twi as an orphan (DarthLink22's Aftermath of the Games series, and Highlord Langslock's Harmony and Valor), because I can totally understand it, I am also quite reluctant to separate poor Twilight from her parents. So thus, Night Light and Velvet are both alive in my own headcanon continuity.
- Considering the pony Twilight's fear of "magic kindergarten" and Sci-Twi's own experience with bullying at Crystal Prep, I am of the sad opinion that poor Sci-Twi has probably faced bullying from a rather early age. I can definitely see it in the case that Twilight probably went into school delighted with the idea of learning and education, and thus would have been marked as a target by other kids for it. (Ever had a classmate who asked the teacher about homework when they forgot to assign it? I'm sure poor Twi did that at least once...) Moving to Crystal Prep only compounded the problem, as the intense academic environment made Twi the target of envy from her classmates for her excellent marks - and her shyness and timidity only made her an easier target, sadly.
- We know that Sci-Twi probably had no real friends growing up. (Well, possibly - I still wonder about the EG versions of Moondancer, Lemon Hearts, Twinkleshine and Minuette.) Her only real friend upon our introduction to her is Spike... and as to how they met, I see him as having been a gift for her, maybe from Shining Armor, actually. (Or, if you still want to connect Celestia to Spike and Twi's first meeting, then maybe Spike was a lost puppy who Celestia found and brought to the shelter, and later was picked up and given to Twilight.)
- One tidbit I forgot about my headcanon for Sci-Twi's mother, is the idea that Twilight Velvet got her daughter interested in the Daring Do series. I remember a few stories here and there that had Twi's mother as an editor for A.K. Yearling, and I liked that idea enough to run with it for my own headcanon.
- Having mentioned Shining Armor previously, while we haven't exactly seen him in the best light (unintentionally pressuring Twilight into competing in the Friendship Games...) I still imagine him as her loving older brother, just maybe a bit overbearing in the regard that he was something of a big-man-on-campus at CPA and hoped his sister would have a great time there as well. (I imagine when he found out the reason for Twi transferring to CHS, he had a BIG part in Cinch stepping down as Principal...)
- While Twilight's relationship with Dean Cadence is never really elaborated on in the movie, I still see some of their old past together in my own canon: Cadence was Twilight's favorite babysitter as a kid. Twilight is just too polite (and nervous of breaking protocol in a place like CPA) to not address her by just her name.
- A joke I have about Twilight and Shining Armor's relationship as siblings is, even though they're very close siblings and love each other very much, they have had some epic battles in Ogres and Oubliettes, and over their favorite science fiction series. (Shining's a Star Wars fan, while Twi is for Star Trek or Doctor Who.)
- I've tried to give thought to what Twilight's favorite books would be, and soon concluded that it'd be much easier to consider the books that she WOULDN'T like. :rainbowlaugh: But in all seriousness, I really do see Twilight as a bibliophile (I can't even believe I had to type that XD), and imagine that she'd go for a lot of subjects: math, science and history in particular, but I can see her reading up on a lot of other books too: from philosophy to science fiction (though I see her as more into classics like Verne and Wells than the latest stuff), and even some romance too. Hey, why not?
- Oh, and in regard to romance... just to throw it out there, while I don't really like Timber Spruce, I don't hate him or his pairing with Twilight either. It's just one of those things that's "there" for me. And while I'm not a big SciFlash or SciSet shipper, I do definitely understand the appeal of the latter pairing. For me, personally, I'd rather focus on Sci-Twi's new friendships and her life at CHS rather than fuss about who should be her boyfriend, girlfriend, what-have-you...
- Now, to continue with my favorite game of "what their favorite movie would be?" When I think about the human Twilight Sparkle and various science fiction movies, I see her as enjoying films from the classic Frankenstein (I can legitimately see her wanting to make the creature just so she can do right by him and treat him properly) to E.T. and Back to the Future. And as a Star Trek fan, I'm sure she'd be a fan of The Wrath of Khan, since that seems to be the Trek film the fans like the most. (Though, just personally, The Voyage Home is my favorite Trek film XD) Oh, and I like to imagine her as a fan of Galaxy Quest too, because why not? :rainbowlaugh:

Anyway, those are what thoughts I've had. I'll be interested, as always, to see what response to them I may get. ^_^

I imagine Twilight is the type of character who comes up with a basic and almost standard concept for an Ogres and Oubliettes character, for example, Half Orc Barbarian and optimizes the stats, but then does something interesting with the personality and backstory, for example, actually having two living and loving parents, and making the giant 6'6 green guy with tusks an absolute gentleman, dressed to the nines, but just as effective as any party member.

I imagine that the Timber thing was more "Oh, this attractive guy is being actually nice to me and likes me, this, is a nice change of pace, I'm going to try this out."

I also like to think that since she got her geode, she's been fascinated with true magic and has wanted to go through the Mirror Portal to see Equestria. Sunset has always warned her that as Idyllic as Equestria can be, the portal leads to a town that considers a Forest of Death a backyard, so if she DOES go there, please either wait for her, or be with her Princess counterpart, whom she's always slightly nervous around since there's presumably an age gap between them and our dear Princess is NOTABLY more confident than Sci-Twi for obvious reasons.

When Sci-Twi gets angry, it isn't as obvious as say, Sunset or Flash. She goes QUIET. Where Sunset's rage is fire, Sci-Twi's rage is ice.

While she's come to terms with the whole Midnight Sparkle incident, she's still not entirely confident that some people considered her a prime case of Evil Is Sexy.

i will have to get back to you

These headcanons align so closely with my own, it's scary.

That being said, I do like the idea that at some earlier point in her time in school, Sci-Twi did have most if not all of the Canterlot Six's counterparts as her classmates, with Moondancer eventually joining her at Crystal Prep but leaving thanks to Cinch's harsh standards. Speaking of the old witch, got any headcanons for her?

I have to agree with most of it. However, I think Minutte, Lemon Hearts and Twinkleshine go to CHS, Moondancer... :applejackunsure:. I think Shining would be a big Flash Gordon fan (Star Wars is, at it's core, George Lucas' massive Flash Gordon fan fic with laser swords and samurai.) I don't see her playing Not-D&D. I think she would be more in documentaries then fictional films.
As for her and Timber... I am a FlashLight shipper in all the forms so take what I say with a pillar of salt, I don't think she really loves him, kind of infatuated with him, granted she might have been drawn to Flash if it weren't for Princess Twilight...

All good headcanons to have. I especially like the one about her O&O character building. :rainbowlaugh: Now I'm imagining a game session with Shining's traditional paladin and Twilight's half-orc barbarian gentleman! XD

On a more serious note, I like the thought about her interest in magic and Equestria. It's a nice one, both to show that she's well beyond being terrified of having magic, and yet it also shows her difference to Princess Twilight. (Boy, I really hope that the next EG special is a good one. Seeing Sunset, RD and Sci-Twi stranded in Equestria sounds like a hell of an idea!)

Also, good idea about her temper. I imagine that Sci-Twi's the kind of person who gets anxious or stressed easily (part and parcel of being Twilight Sparkle), but when she gets truly angry... she just gets focused. And when that happens, watch out.

4919332
Wow, really? XD Heh, how about that!

I do like the idea that at some earlier point in her time in school, Sci-Twi did have most if not all of the Canterlot Six's counterparts as her classmates, with Moondancer eventually joining her at Crystal Prep but leaving thanks to Cinch's harsh standards.

That's actually eerily close to my own headcanon for EG-Moondancer. Except that I kicked around her managed to apply for the Everton Independent Study thing that Twilight was after in the Friendship Games... and yeah, Moondancer left to get the hell away from Abacus Grinch - I mean, Cinch!

Speaking of the old witch, got any headcanons for her?

Oh, I've had a few. I was going to save them for an entry on Crystal Prep, since the character's so intertwined with that "hallowed" institute of learning... but we'll see. Maybe I'll give the old bat a separate heading, I recently read some stuff that expanded my headcanon about Cinch...

4919404

She's the type to know the rules of O&O inside and out and has presumably found ways to roll well without it being cheating so she KNOWS how to make the best of her stats and what race and class mix well, but going traditional "Me smash" Barbarian would be boring. So, mix it up a little.

Yeah, she is interested in magic, but considering the whole Midnight Sparkle thing, I think she'd probably have some flashbacks if she ever saw Nightmare Moon, or even Luna losing her temper. I do like the idea of her spending some time in Equestria learning about magic under Luna like the Princess did under Celestia though, that sounds fun.

As for Twilight's anger, well, you remember Lesson Zero, you know what she can be like when she gets nuts. And when she gets ANGRY, well, she can do the same. Except INTENTIONALLY. (I like to think she has the Scary Shiny Glasses when she gets actually mad because god I love that trope.)

4919409

I do like the idea of her spending some time in Equestria learning about magic under Luna like the Princess did under Celestia though, that sounds fun.

That would be really fun.

And also, yeah, I can totally see Twi rocking the scary-shiny glasses trope. XD I'd love to see her do that in, say, a confrontation with ex-Principal Cinch, where Twilight calmly, coldly lays out just WHAT she thinks of her and why she'll never be afraid of her ever again...

4919408
Looking forward to those, and more reason not to like the old goat.

...no, I shouldn't call her that. It's an insult to the goats.

4919413

And also, yeah, I can totally see Twi rocking the scary-shiny glasses trope. XD I'd love to see her do that in, say, a confrontation with ex-Principal Cinch, where Twilight calmly, coldly lays out just WHAT she thinks of her and why she'll never be afraid of her ever again...

"You've made a great deal of mistakes, Abacus. You turned a prestigious school into one with the highest stress levels in the area, ruined many potential friendships, isolated me from the rest of my peers and treated me like a puppet on strings and eventually turned me into a monster. I still have nightmares about that day. But you know what? I might be scared of Midnight Sparkle. But I'm no longer afraid of you. Now I recommend you leave, lest you find my self control, lacking, and some details you would prefer remain hidden come out into the light." Twilight's lips curved upwards, parting to show teeth. It wasn't a smile. "You wouldn't want that, would you?"

4919347

I think Shining would be a big Flash Gordon fan (Star Wars is, at it's core, George Lucas' massive Flash Gordon fan fic with laser swords and samurai.)

Heh. I can see that too. I just named Star Wars because I'm well familiar with the "Trek vs. Wars" fan arguments (I'm a SW fan, my big sister's more of a Trekkie) so I kind of went with that for Shiny and Twily.

As for her and Timber... I am a FlashLight shipper in all the forms so take what I say with a pillar of salt, I don't think she really loves him, kind of infatuated with him

As I said before, I don't ship Timberlight. And while I'm not a diehard Flashlight shipper, I do think that a BIG part of Twi's relationship with Timber is that he's the very first boy to ever make a move to flirt with or charm her, so there is a definite "I can't believe you'd notice me!" infatuation there. No idea about how things would have gone with her and Flash in other circumstances. Maybe they'd have gotten together, maybe not.

4919418

...no, I shouldn't call her that. It's an insult to the goats.

In that case, I'd also like to retract my earlier "old bat" comment, because old bats are still a damn sight more pleasant and friendly than her! XD

4919419
Yes, that's excellent! Go Twilight!

Cinch, you better just walk away now. Walk away, as far as you can, and never look back.

4919429

That's the thing about both Twilights, they're merciful. But that's the thing about mercy, when it runs out, and you've pushed the one offering mercy too far too many times, well, they stop being nice. You saw what happened to Tirek when Twilight lost Golden Oaks. The guy had all the magic in Equestria save for the Princesses, and Twilight fought him to a STANDSTILL. Sci-Twi can't do that, but she knows the power that words can have. She's been exposed to that many times over courtesy of Cinch, and now, she's more than willing to turn the tables around.

4919432
Well said. To quote John Dryden, "beware the fury of a patient man".

Or in this case, pony-girl, but the sentiment still works.

4919437

Precisely. I imagine she'd get along better with Pony Trixie than Human Trixie since the pony is more mature, albeit that's not hard since her confidence is more earned. Then again, she could also be more nervous around her as she might be overwhelmed by how even more over the top she is, her ACTUAL magic aside from stage magic, and her, less than reliable moral compass.

4919422

As I said before, I don't ship Timberlight. And while I'm not a diehard Flashlight shipper, I do think that a BIG part of Twi's relationship with Timber is that he's the very first boy to ever make a move to flirt with or charm her, so there is a definite "I can't believe you'd notice me!" infatuation there. No idea about how things would have gone with her and Flash in other circumstances. Maybe they'd have gotten together, maybe not.

I think you took me out of context.

4919440
I think that once the initial unease had passed, Sci-Twi would get along fairly okay with Pony Trixie. There really doesn't seem to be much enmity between human Twilight and Trixie, so there'd be a hilarious irony in the pony magician and the human Sparkle being friends. XD

4919444
Um, how? All I meant by what I said previously was that I don't really ship Sci-Twi with either boy. I was agreeing with you (or at least, trying to) when I said that yes, I think that Twi's relationship with Timber is built on infatuation than more natural compatibility or such. That's all.

4919446

Odds are she'd rub it in Princess Twilight's face just to see her squirm because it's funny. Trixie may not be a bad pony, but every mare needs a hobby. Annoying Twilight but not to the point where she could get in actual trouble for it is one of them. The other is being the devil on Starlight's shoulder to Twilight's angel.

4919452
Yeah, that's Trixie all right. Oh boy...

4919457

She has fun with what she does.

4919451
Oh... we seem to just miss each other. Let's agree that we don't ship Sci-Twi and Timber and that it's not likely to last.

4919457

She's very much Chaotic Neutral. She's not a BAD pony, but she very much enjoys being the Devil on Starlight's shoulder a bit too much.

4972498

She's honestly not even that mad at Twilight, anymore anyway, she just likes to piss her off. It's funny.
