State of the Writer: May 2024!

    Didn't write nothing! clapping emoji!

My surgery was on the 22nd, and it went well, I'm still in recovery for technically the next week and a half or so, but as of this week I'm already feeling back to normal. Which I have to keep reminding myself I am not, lest I overdo something and hurt myself. <_< I am at least following the discharge instructions, so no worries about that.

    PP vs. What I've Become

Knight Breeze's What I've Become might not be a name you've heard before, but given its stats, especially the over 60,000 views, I feel safe calling it a fandom classic. :) Major spoilers ahead for a ten-year-old story!

Fic recs, May 20th: Project Get! #17!

Hey! :D Welcome back to Project Get!, where I sort my RIL by views and grab the last 10 on the list that aren't sequels, unfinished, or by the same author twice! I've been trying to do this a lot more frequently, but 'frequent' has not exactly described these blogs out of me, has it? D: I dunno if that could change in the near future. I've got outpatient surgery on Wednesday this week, so I'm

Oh boy, it's meme time! · 3:19pm Dec 13th, 2020

This one's Posh's fault, but I have taken the liberty of fixing the numbers because goddammit argh

1. Tell us about your current project(s) – what’s it about, how’s progress, what do you love most about it?

Currently working on How Sunset Got Her Groove Back, the awful-titled sequel to A Piece of Meat. Almost done with the prologue! :B Writing has been slow. Then again, yesterday in the bath, I was ignoring my audiobook and came up with an amazing connection between two of the characters. I said aloud, "This story's awesome! I hope I can write it." That's always the issue, right?

I'm also working on rewriting the first seven seasons of MLP as a legally distinct IP. That's going good. I keep thinking about the next chapter of The Princess's Captain, I'm pretty sure I know what it is after some intense waffling. Also working on the villain deck for Trixie, with zero playtesting time, oof.

2. Tell us about what you’re most looking forward to writing – in your current project, or a future project

There's a chapter of The Princess's Captain that's... way far down the line. Ugh, I have to get them together first! It's probably not even the next major adventure, maybe the one after? Anyway, I think it's awesome and I can't wait to get to it.

3. What is that one scene that you’ve always wanted to write but can’t be arsed to write all of the set-up and context it would need? (consider this permission to write it and/or share it anyway)

I have a 120-page document of unwritten ideas, I cannot pick just one.

4. Share a sentence or paragraph from your writing that you’re really proud of (explain why, if you like)

I have written some seriously funny shit in my day. Like the "Somepony needs a spanking!" "Sweet Celestia, I hope it's me" exchange from Beer and a Knife Fight 3. :D Or the entirety of Sunset Shimmer Almost Goes to a Convention from Fast Time at Stinky Sugar. Or The Best Joke I Will Ever Write, from the same. Fast Times is just great, yo.

5. What character that you’re writing do you most identify with?

Starlight Glimmer, because she's old and fat and fails at everything she does.

6. What character do you have the most fun writing?

I really do like my version of Tempest Shadow, who is at least somewhat unlike the real Tempest Shadow. She's violent. :D

7. What do you think are the characteristics of your personal writing style? Would others agree?

I'm honestly not sure. Though I know that, left to my own devices, I am painfully minimalist, like, to a fault. I'm really bad at leaving in enough details to fully describe things in a satisfying manner.

8. Is what you like to write the same as what you like to read?

I guess the answer to this is "yes, because it's everything"?

9. Are you more of a drabble or a longfic kind of writer? Pantser or plotter? Do you wish you were the other?

I wish I could finish longfics more, one-shots are so much easier to get done.

I am a pantsy plotter, and I wish I plotted a little more consistently. :B

10. How would you describe your writing process?

1) Spent hours, days, weeks or even years thinking about the story and how awesome it's going to be.

2) Scream and cry and moan because writing is awful.

3) Never write anything.

11. What do you envy in other writers?

The ability to finish things. :B

12. Do you want your writing to be famous?

Like... Not this writing, necessarily, but I would like to be a famous and successful writer someday.

13. Do you share your writing online? (Drop a link!) Do you have projects you’ve kept just for yourself?

I will quote Posh here:

...I mean...

*gestures*

14. At what point in writing do you come up with a title?

Usually right out the gate. Sometimes, a title is what I base an entire story off of. I really love doing that. If I get halfway through a story and haven't titled it, I'm in deep shit.

15. Which is harder: titles or summaries (or tags)?

Oh, summaries by a long shot.

16. Tried anything new with your writing lately? (style, POV, genre, fandom?)

I wrote a couple experimental horror fics, neither of which particularly worked.

17. Do you think readers perceive your work - or you - differently to you? What do you think would surprise your readers about your writing or your motivations?

Let's put it this way: My worked should be perceived as I am, because I am a chucklefuck with an overdeveloped sense of self-importance when I'm not withering beneath the crushing weight of clinical depression.

But I do try and portray myself online as I am in real life. It's taken a long time to get this right, and I'm probably still perfecting it.

18. Do any of your stories have alternative versions? (plotlines that you abandoned, AUs of your own work, different characterisations?) Tell us about them.

Not really. I usually tend to save everything and either reuse what isn't used or else release it as omake. But I haven't done the latter much!

19. Is there something you always find yourself repeating in your writing? (favourite verb, something you describe ‘too often’, trope you can’t get enough of?)

Oh, for sure.

20. Tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about (symbolism you’ve included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes?)

I want to write romance stories that depict relationships realistically because when I was a kid, I absolutely believed the "guy gets the girl at the end" tripe literally every piece of fiction was selling me. I feel incredibly strongly about this, and it has colored not only my writing, but my reviewing at least since I got in this fandom.

Also, the in-joke is the Great Caramel Shortage.

21. What other medium do you think your story would work well as? (film, webcomic, animated series?)

Animation, obviously. I've been told I have a very visual style. :)

22. Do you reread your old works? How do you feel about them?

I reread my comedies all the time, and I always enjoy them. :D If I've done anything right as a writer, it's perfecting the idea of writing for oneself.

23. What’s the story idea you’ve had in your head for the longest?

My Fallout: Equestria tragedy fic. :(

24. Would you say your writing has changed over time?

Anyone whose writing hasn't changed over time is doing it wrong. o.O

25. What part of writing is the most fun?

The planning. :B To a fault.

Yay! This was neat and I wish I could give you more hugs and support. You deserve all of it.

#10 — Spot on for me too

This looks fun, maybe I'll fill one of these out too.

Literally sometimes all I need for a title is to come up with a play on words or something that sounds good, or a song or something, and then I just write a story based on that. :B

Like, Fluttershy Goes to Hell: Provocative, controversial, absolutely dares the reader to find out just why someone would call a story that.

Dinky's First Kill, same thing. The idea started as an original story called something like "Jessie's First Kill", trying to create that weird mixture of dark and innocent.

Civil Twilight was written based on the title, just because I had recently heard the term and thought it sounded good. I think I waited until I had the right idea to fit to it, but otherwise, yeah.

Other stories that were "come up with title first, figure out story later" include Epic Unicorn History: The Beards of Harmony, Discord's Deli of Chaos, Fast Times at Stinky Sugar and Kamen Rider Taco. :) Not that I am necessarily saying these are all my best work or anything. Just that it's what I do. :B

This one's Posh's fault, but I have taken the liberty of fixing the numbers because goddammit argh

You can’t fix what ain’t broke.
