I know a lot of fans didn't like this episode, but I thought it kept everyone in character and was freaking hilarious.

Rarity has a huge crush on Trenderhoof, who she's never actually met. This was exactly her attitude toward Prince Blueblood going into the series. Trenderhoof is a bit of a fool, but he's not an obnoxious idiot like Blueblood, so her crush survives her first social encounters with him. That's hardly implausible.

This is because the Crystal Empire was once a Republic, and the title of "emperor" evolved from one given to their chief magistrate, who was commander of their armies.
