JINGLEMASSSS!!! · 4:35am Nov 9th, 2022
The winds are blowing and a cold front is coming in. You look up and notice the sky is already transitioning into those ever-stunning shades of oranges and reds as the sun dips lower into the sky toward the horizon. A quick glance at your watch confirms what you were wondering; it’s not even five in the afternoon yet. Before you can continue to wonder about the early sunset, a single white flake lands on the tip of your nose and you smile. Ah, you think to yourself. It’s wintertime.
The smell of pine, the warmth of woodfire, the taste of eggnog. All of those seasonal memories flood your brain and you can’t help but sigh happily. Soon, your light jacket won’t be enough to brace your body for the cold. The air grows colder as the sun disappears from the sky, and above you, the stars peek out as the last light of the day fades away. The North Star---Polaris---shines brightly, ever proud to guide you throughout the year. You stick your hands in your pockets and breathe out a heavy breath. You can see how it forms a little cloud in front of you.
Your feet take you the rest of the way to your destination: a small local coffee shop on the corner of the street you live on. You’ve only been outside for less than twenty minutes, but your cheeks are red and cold as you walk in. The warmth inside is a welcome gift as you queue up to order. You wonder what to order, stuck between a hot chocolate and a warm apple cider. You decide to go with the cider. You can always make hot chocolate at home.
Finally, it’s your turn to order. On the radio playing softly across the store is some holiday music that normally you’d find annoying, but right now? It only serves to widen your smile as you ask for the cider. You get a baked good to go along with it, because why not?
Cider in hand, you take a seat next to the window and watch as the snow falls. The light reflects off of the powdery substance, and the night is quiet and still. Your reflection, barely visible, smiles back at you. You take a sip of your drink. It’s almost too hot to drink. But not quite. It’s perfectly spiced. The minutes tick by as you watch snowflakes accumulate outside. This is perfect, you think.
You take out your phone to take a picture and remember this moment forever. You snap a pic and look back at it. It’s not perfect, but you can see the way you’re smiling in the reflection of the window. You decide to keep the image anyway. While you’re here, you decide you should check your favourite website. You click the internet browser and grin happily, for Jinglemas 2022 has just been announced. You don’t hesitate in signing up.
It’s the most wonderful time of the year, after all.
