    Apologizes...

Sorry for not being frequent with my Questions of the Week. I've been busy with some projects as well as homebrewing DnD 5e content. :twilightblush:

Yeah, that's not a great excuse, but it is what it is.

Hopefully I'll have an idea for a question or two later (that's the other problem, thinking of questions I haven't already asked), we'll see. :rainbowwild:

Question of the Week #86 · 12:31am Dec 28th, 2022

Hello everyone and welcome back to the question of the week (hopefully nobody's getting sick and tired of that).

So in our last blog for this year, I wanted to discuss a tabletop gaming project that I've been working on.

I was thinking about this idea for a tabletop rpg where instead of rolling dice, players have their own deck of playing cards, with the cards having different effects based off of the characters class, subclass, etc...

Now I wanted to ask a couple things.

So one is what is your favorite type of setting for an rpg? Fantasy? Sci fi? Western?

Also since we're using cards in the place of dice, are there any mechanics you might like to see in a class or subclass, that can use cards?:moustache:

The other thing I wanted to ask is, what is something that maybe annoys you in some rpgs, that you would love to see addressed or avoided entirely?

And those are my questions for a week, thank you so much for hanging out and reading my blog. I hope everything went well for you during the holidays and that you have a magnificent day.

I think it's a good idea to replace dice with cards. You still retain the unexpected results but remove luck from the equation. Luck isn't a good feature because it isn't tied to a person's skill.

1. Can't say I have a favorite, since most of them are fantasy or sci-fi.
2. Rarely use cards, so no comment
3. Farming for xp; various quests should drop xp enough that you don't need to idle in an area and strike down anything that spawns up just to reach a certain level.

Never got to play D&D/O&O, but in traditional games I can imagine I am more inclined towards the medieval-tech fantacy kind of setting. If it includes the ponies, any setting would work; can't get enough of them!

As a side: the PC/console rpg gaming scene would probably be more on the Sci-fi kind. Using guns require some level of skill whereas tabletop D&D is more luck and character based, even if it is cards, therefore, equalized between players.

Truly? Any setting would work if there is enough thought and TLC put into it. When working with cards, the main question is how long would a whole campaign last? Munchkin is a good example of an hour-plus long campaign that uses cards.

If it is D&D length, how would you get the players to use their cards so as to "circulate the (card) economy"? If it is short like Munchkin, how do you make it interesting that it forces players to get interested in replaying? For this question: personally, I find the aspect of sabotage real fun and funny; not having an active sabotage class like Among Us's imposter is good.

Like before, Munchkin allows you to hold monster cards that let you play it whenever any players doesn't come across a monster or if you have a specific card that boost the current monster's level. Pretty dirty or good if they force the losing player into negotiating help by giving their loot as player to player negotiation. Or it can be used on yourself to get free loot from the monster if you can kill it.

As for the other questions, I don't play or have enough hours to judge what classes and sub-classes, and whatever rpg issues players would find bad. I hope this might help a bit

I came close to being able to being able to play a tabletop but that put to stop like a pickax to the temple.
They just didn't like the idea of my plans to craft the ONE RING:twilightsmile:
Granted it wold have been bound to me, as would have been the 3, 7 and the 9. :pinkiecrazy:

I think non-fantasy RPGs are fun; I DM Vampire the Masquerade, and I would love to DM a Cyberpunk RPG sometime. Lancer is a lot of fun. As long as the setting isn't generic, I'll have fun.

Not sure how to answer what I'd like to see, but I'm definitely annoyed when some RPGs either end up getting too strict with following mechanics, or when it's too roll and luck based. Would love to see something that doesn't leave all encounters to chance and instead uses a clever utilization of skills and actions.

I like a wide variety of RPGs from fantasy to science fiction to cyberpunk or steampunk. I usually like an easy dice system which is why Pathfinder appeals to me. But I also like games like Shadowrun and Cyberpunk (tabletop edition).
