Greetings, everyone! This is Mr. J back with another animated show review for tonight! This evening, I will be reviewing the 2022 anthology miniseries entitled “Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi”! When I first heard of and saw the trailer for this series, I was both surprised and excited to see more animated Star Wars content in general and to also learn more about the characters from the prequel trilogy era. I, for one, was rather excited specifically to see how Count Dooku turned to the dark side, how he met Darth Sideous, and how his relationship was with Qui-Gon Jinn.

This doesn’t need a summary honestly since it is an anthology type of miniseries. Therefore, I will be talking about what I enjoyed from all six shorts from start to finish. Here they are:

1). Life and Death

This was a pretty good episode! I was amazed at how Ahsoka connected with that beast through the Force in a series of unexpected events. For a moment, I thought her parents would be killed by that monster which would have been a tragic start of her life, but thankfully that didn’t happen. It shows us the culture, life, and happiness of her own species and how they raised her up. If this was a full-length episode, I would have loved to see more of her childhood and how she interacted with her family and friends.

2). Justice

This is when it gets more interesting. Jedi Master Dooku and his Padawan Qui-Gon Jinn had a good master/apprentice relationship up until the dire situation got a lot more serious. Right when his twisted sense of justice clouded his judgement, we can see Dooku almost letting his dark side overcome him. But of course, he stopped himself before things got worse. That was a nice foreshadowing of his inevitable turn, and seeing Qui-Gon trying to be both his apprentice and helpful friend was nice to see.

3. Choices

Again, seeing more signs of Dooku’s turn to the dark side kept getting more fascinating. This time, we see Mace Windu paired with him as they go on a serious mission of investigating the death of one of their own. We see differing opinions and points of view that reflect who they are as Jedi Knights—somewhat reminiscent of the differing personalities between Obi-Wan and Anakin. The action was just as great as well as the tremendous voice acting and animation.

4. The Sith Lord

By far the best episode of this miniseries for obvious reasons. While it was awesome, it was also sad at the same time. We finally see Dooku confront Darth Sideous in regards to the death of Qui-Gon Jinn. Following him was Jedi Master Yaddle who honestly did her best to reach out to Dooku and appeal to him with reasoning. She even agreed with what he said about the Jedi Order, but alas, it was already too late. Even though there were hints of regret expressed by Dooku, he made his choice to become allies with the Sith. The only thing that disappointed me the most was the lack of backstory behind their first meeting. When did they meet for the first time? How did Dooku become his apprentice in the first place? I really wanted to see that in this short, but oh well. I was still happy with what I got.

Nonetheless, the writing was great and the vocal performances were top-notch.

5. Practice Makes Perfect

This was both wholesome and heartbreaking, to be honest. I never thought I would see an episode where Anakin is actually training Ahsoka via unorthodox measures. Little did she know he was preparing her for something none of them knew was coming—Order 66. If she didn’t go through that type of training, she would have been slain during Order 66; it’s quite solemn to think about. She was prepared for the worst to happen, and that was the time she was ready to face it….thanks to her former master who later became Darth Vader. It came full circle, the way I see it.

6. Resolve

Lastly, this episode, while not the best, was great in its own right. Right after the death of Padme, Ahsoka tries to hide her identity as a Jedi now that the Galactic Empire is hunting down Jedi survivors and all those who harbor them. Seeing her brief fight with an Inquisitor was also interesting to see. Now, a lot of people were disappointed with the way it was done so quickly and how wasted the Inquisitor was, despite being featured from the trailer. While I was honestly surprised it ended that quickly, it actually makes sense. Why would she struggle against a hunting dog who was obviously not trained to kill the best and most well-trained of the Jedi? You can tell Vader had no issue with using the Inquisitors as disposable cannon fodder to only kill weaker opponents.

So seeing Ahsoka instantly kill this measly Inquisitor made sense because she was trained by one of the best Jedi warriors of the galaxy. It was not a big deal for her.

Overall, this miniseries was awesome and flawless despite some missed opportunities I would have loved to see more of. I will rate this a solid 5/5: Tales of Greatness!

Peace!
