I discovered/realized/admitted I was asexual back in 2021. Here's to another year of understanding oneself, to finding the words that were always there.
I first encountered the concept of asexuality years ago, back when I watched season 3 of Bojack Horseman in 2016. But I never stopped to think if the label might apply to me. "That's not normal. I'm normal. Therefore there's no need to examine the idea in further detail."
In 2021, someone asked me if I was asexual. My first answer was "no, of course not." That knee jerk reaction, that desire to be normal. And yet, that question, my answer, felt incorrect in some way. I looked into it more, did some reflection. I never had a relationship with anyone, never felt the magnetic pull that everyone claimed was fundamental to attraction.
Then I knew, now I know. I'm aromantic asexual.
I hope that everyone reading this, understands themselves the same way. If you don't—if there is some minor idea sitting at the back of your mind, pushed out by the pressure to be "normal"—I hope your journey takes less time than mine did.
Hear hear! Understanding yourself is a tricky path, but so worth doing.
