A JD Review: Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023) · 1:38am Jun 5th, 2023

The long-awaited sequel to my favorite Spider-Man movie is here, and I'm just as jaw-dropped as before :coolphoto: Can't wait to talk about it, so let's jump in!

NON-SPOILER REVIEW

Across the Spider-Verse picks up shortly after the events of the first film, with Miles struggling to find his place on the grander scale of the Multiverse, or the Spider-Verse as he likes to call it. He faces off against The Spot, a villain who might hold a bit more of a connection to Miles than you might think. And now, we're shown more of Gwen's story in this film, which is definitely appreciated. She and Miles are fantastic.

Miguel O'Hara as Spider-Man 2099 was a great addition, as well as the supporting cast. Except for Spider-Punk (could barely understand the guy, he mumbled every time he spoke XD). Goodness, the callbacks, cameos, and references in this film were just way too many to name without spoiling anything, so I'll just say this film was definitely made for Spider-Man fans. It's a huge love letter to the character and the fans throughout Spider-Man's entire existence.

The only negative I would say would be the story, which is great don't get me wrong, but you could tell this was definitely a Part 1. It definitely feels like an incomplete story, but other than that I loved it! Part 2 is gonna be INSANE!

9/10! What were your thoughts?

SPOILER REVIEW

The shift in focus to Miles' mother was an interesting choice, but an appreciated one. The first film really saw Miles and his dad and their relationship, so giving the sequel to the relationship he has with his mom was great. Not to mention a little Miles and Gwen relationship teasing here and there :ajsmug: Loved all the character interactions, as well as the characters new and old entering and returning to the mix. Still would have like Spider-Noir and Spider-Ham to return, but they got a little cameo at the very end (which just means they'll be in Beyond the Spider-Verse!).

Now then, some of my favorite cameos lol :rainbowlaugh: I LOVED seeing PS4 Spider-Man just hanging out and getting ready to get sent back to his dimension. Hope we get to see some reference to that in the upcoming Spider-Man 2. Spectacular Spider-Man had a short speaking role, but that was still awesome. Andrew Garfield got a cameo and so did Tobey in the background. Plus Venom's universe popped up, alongside a Lego universe :rainbowlaugh:

All the new characters were fun, and Spider-Man 2099 was a ruthless anti-hero in this. The fact that he wouldn't let Miles try and prevent his dad's death was crazy, but I guess we'll see if Miles can save his dad in the next film. So much was left unanswered and the stakes have never been higher, and now we have to wait a year for the next film :raritydespair: Gonna be a long wait, but I'm sure it'll be worth it haha

This Movie... was AMAZING!!!!!!!! I loved everything! the villans, the heros, the refrences!!! I really liked it, can't wait for Beyond

I loved how this movie tied literally everything in the Marvel Multiverse. Even outside Sony's iron hold of Spidey.

During that whole scene, I was just looking at all of the others and thinking 'you're all just ok with letting someone die? And you have the gall to call yourselves Spiders!"

Already looking forward to it. Miles and Spider-Gwen are also playable in the third Marvel Ultimate Alliance game that I have.

I got to see it last Thursday.
Way better multiverse film than Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness.

5731845 The villains especially, didn’t expect that much from Spot, but damn :rainbowderp:

5731856 Really hoping they go ALL OUT with Secret Wars :rainbowdetermined2:

5731858 Seriously. They just let Miguel lead them like they don’t have a will of their own

5731902 Definitely agree :moustache:

Yeah I’m not gonna see it yet. I’m gonna wait for the second part to come out so I don’t have to wait a year after a cliffhanger.

Sony and James Gunn showing disney how to make make movies/money with true quality

My Graduation from High School was on the films premiere date. The Afterparty my class had was at a place called FatCats. It had some cool things there, including a few movie theaters.

Across the SpiderVerse was showing, so I got to see it on premiere. I literally LOL’d in there when every single Spider Man pointed at each other.
I thought that it was acceptable to do it though, considering that everyone else in there was my age.

All in all, S-tier film, can’t wait for the sequel!

5733877 Definitely s-tier :coolphoto:

To me, it's not quite as good as the first one, although it's certainly a lot more ambitious. Still, a very solid sequel. Man, they really put Miles and Gwen through the wringer in this movie (especially Miles). I've never seen Miguel go that berserk in anything (granted, I've never read his comics, maybe that's how he is in those). I hope Spot gets to be in the spotlight a little more in the finale, considering he's supposed the be the Multiverse-ending threat.

Obviously imperfect. But here's Frankie singing the web slinging song.
