State of the Author, december 2023

Here we are. Another year is almost over. The winter solstice is around the corner, along with any number of special holidays. It's a white Christmas in Oslo. The snow came relatively early here this year, falling in November and staying ever since, with every apparent intention to stick it out until spring. And I am sitting at home resting and relaxing, also, until spring.

    New story: The Queen's Speech

"Oh yeah, in ancient Equestria ponies believed in the classical six elements of friendship, but now we've discovered there are actually over a hundred elements organized into the Periodic Table of Friendship. The most recent addition was element 101: Holding-your-friend's-mane-while-she-pukes, aka Bon-Bonium."

The trick, of course, is making a necklace out of something with a half-life of twenty minutes.

Some kinds of friendship have to be transported in thick lead containers and can only be safely studied in high-security laboratories.

(I'm looking at you, Starlight and Trixie.)

Some exotic elements, like caring-about-your-friend's-fanfiction-ium, live for only milliseconds.

What's the one where you get a drunken call at 3am, and sigh deeply while you're getting dressed to drive 100 miles to bail someone out?
:raritywink:

I believe that was element 69, Rainbow-Dash's-Eighteenth-Birthdayium. There was bitter competition for that particular spot.

So there's that theory that are stable friendship elements within the hypothetical Island of Discord?

I hear there are even higher ranked, but only theoretical Elements that have yet to be proven to be actually possible, such as Completly-platonic-freindship-between-male-protagonist-and-main-female-lead-in-an-anime-ium

Nonsense! I've maintained a healthy supply for years. And that includes the times an RL friend's asked me to proofread something.

Excellent is what it is. I'd like to see the completed table.

This new theory raises further questions. Do the elements come in many different isotopes with different weights and lifetimes? Will unstable elements like Bon-Bonium lead to a chain of decays before reaching a stable end-point? Can we trigger the fission of heavy elements with the addition of a little laughter or kindness? Or fuse lighter elements?

I have no doubt that friendship can do all these things and more! "unstable elements like Bon-Bonium lead to a chain of decays before reaching a stable end-point" just sounds like a funny story to tell the grandfoals about how the two of you met and started dating. It's just a matter of mapping out which intervening elements they passed through on the way. Does Bon-Bonium turn into element 89, Help-hide-a-body-in-the-woods? Or maybe element 93, Tell-them-not-to-invest-in-an-MLM?
