MLP AU idea · 3:00am May 14th

A couple years ago, I came up with this MLP AU. This AU is redesigned from the ground up, rather than simply an alternate timeline from canon. In this MLP-AU, all races are regular anthros, human-shaped hands and bipedal body shape with tails, wings, and horns, but, hooves instead of feet. The ponies also have a severe gender imbalance problem, where roughly 80% of their race is female, which necessitates the male ponies partaking in polygamy. Other races such as griffons and yaks do not have this problem, while with races similar to ponies such as zebras, the imbalance is less severe, as for dragons, the problem is the inverse with 80% of their race being male. Here are the main characters:

1. Preston “Presto” Howard is a nerdy teenage human who never had much luck with women. One day, he finds himself in a strange new world as a pony and the only thing he brought with him was a smartphone that has somehow been converted into a crystal that acts as both a map and an encyclopedia. He soon finds that this world has a primarily female populace and that genuinely decent males are few and far between. On his first day in that world, he sees a female unicorn, Pegasus, and earth pony being hustled by common street thugs. Knowing firsthand how ridicule feels, he decides to help them out. After helping them, he expects them to complain about it. To his surprise, they thank him wholeheartedly. Presto learns that he’s a rare breed of pony known as an Alicorn. Presto also learns that male alicorns are even rarer. He discovers that he is the son of a noble family in this new world.

2. Novella Print is a well-read unicorn who reads educational books as a hobby. As a result of her bookish personality, she’s something of a shut-in. Novella wears enchanted glasses that let her read any written language as long as she knows the name of it.

3. Karate “Kara” Chops is a boisterous and gluttonous brawler earth pony. In every tournament she participates in, half of her opponents underestimate her because she’s a woman while the other half underestimate her because she’s fat. In some cases, both. But, Kara always manages to make them eat their words. Despite her weight, Kara is incredibly strong and agile. Despite being a brawler, Kara is a very friendly mare. Though, her displays of affection can be a little aggressive. Her soft body fat makes a very bouncy shield. Kara’s fighting style takes full advantage of her weight.

4. Navy Searchen is a blue pegasus blessed with keen eyesight. She feels annoyed by others assuming she’s in the navy due to her name. Whenever that happens, she clarifies that her name actually comes from her color scheme. She was surprised when Presto accurately guessed that her name comes from her color. Thanks to her keen eyesight, Navy has excellent observational skills. While she’s the first one to admit she’s no rocket scientist, she’s still more intelligent than she gives herself credit for. By simply observing the situation, she can get to the root of the problem and help resolve it.

5. Aquamarine McCoral is a seafoam green kelpie with an impeccable singing voice whenever water is within an arm’s reach of her. She was caught in a fishing net one day and left on dry land. It was as much to her surprise as it was to the other girls with Presto that the male alicorn made an effort to free her. The other girls protested that, as a kelpie, she would lure him to a watery grave. Presto, disgusted by their prejudice, calls them out on it. He asked them how she could lure him to a watery grave when the largest body of water around was a water bottle he was carrying, something he couldn’t possibly fit into. Aquamarine is surprised even more by his kindness when he offers her his water. After drinking, Aquamarine admits that she doesn’t agree with the nature of kelpies and actively tries to reject it. She never liked the idea of killing anyone or anything. The other girls are surprised by this revelation and apologize for judging her before getting to know her. As an added apology, they let her take a shower in the hotel they’re staying at. While showering, Aquamarine sings beautifully. After she gets out, they compliment her singing. She demonstrates this by singing near a glass of water. Whenever she got out of arm’s reach, her singing went off-key.

6. Kuda Neptune is a shy hippocampus (seapony). She feels useless on land as she spent most of her life in the sea. On land, she has difficulty walking and is seen as somewhat clumsy. Presto finds her beached and weakened one day and brings her salt water to get her strength up. She was touched by this and wanted to know him more.

7. Smores Graham is a young kirin with a knack for baking. A personal friend of Kara, Novella, and Navy, she knows they wouldn’t be seen with a male unless he made a decent first impression on them. She offered him some of her region-famous cookies to try. Anyone who likes her baking was okay in her books.

8. Goldie Eagles is a chipper young hippogriff. Her hobbies include bird-watching and bird-themed bingo. As a bird enthusiast, she tries to learn everything she can about birds. She despises the idea of eating poultry. She doesn’t mind other kinds of meat, though. Because of her enthusiasm for birds, she often gets made fun of by being called “Birdbrain.” Contrary to this nickname, she’s far from being stupid. She meets Presto when he’s having trouble learning to fly. She offered to help him out.

9. Lele Chrysalis is a talented Changeling actress. She is also overly proud of her French heritage. She originally lived in Prance, that world’s equivalent of France. As such, she has a high appreciation for upper class society. She will not hesitate to criticize over cooked food. She enjoys performing for others and sometimes does improv when doing so. She refuses to eat escargot because of her bug-like DNA. Her dream is to open an acting school.

10. Orchid Shade is a lethargic, yet observant, thestral (bat pony). Because she sleeps most of the day, others assume she’s lazy. Contrary to this belief, she’s very diligent when awake. Her keen sense of hearing allows her to hear for miles. This makes her very sensitive to high-pitched noises. She met Presto during the night. She was hungry and he offered her some fruit. She was touched by this. He was the first one to offer her fruit.

Interesting idea. Especially making them anthros, only they still have hooves instead of feet. And the whole gender imbalance among ponies feels legit. You tend to see more mares than stallions

Ok I've seen anthro before but that's cool that you've got it all thought out for yourself, I'd say go for it as long as it won't throw a monkey wrench into your other work.

Hey I've got a suggestion you know how you did a Spike the wear pony special, I'm wondering if you could see yourself doing something similar with Nightmare Rarity and the flutter Bat when we get to that, I don't mean two separate ones I mean one that includes both of them learning to control the new power they have, just an idea.
