IDW Main Series#1 Review (Spoilers Abound) · 4:16pm Dec 26th, 2012
Hello everyone SuperPinkBrony12 here again I hope you all had a Merry Christmas.
If you remember from my last blog post I specifically said that I'd managed to pick up the first My Little Pony Friendship is Magic comic from IDW and that I'd tell you what I thought of it once I finished reading it. Well I did and so without further ado here's my review. Of course if you haven't read the comic yet and don't like spoilers I'd advise you to go somewhere else right now.
Alright let's get this review started shall we?
The art style from what I can tell is great, I haven't read a lot of comics but I've read a few before and the animation style seems par for the course as far as comic art styles are concerned. The artwork potrays every setting perfectly even on the covers, speaking of which I got the Pinkie Pie cover which one did you get?
The story goes as follows. One night while trying to earn their cutie marks the Cutie Mark Crusaders are abducted. The next morning Applejack, Rarity, and Rainbow Dash notice that Apple Bloom, Sweetie Belle, and Scootaloo seem to be acting different. As it turns out everypony in town has been acting strange aside from our six heroines and Spike. Twilight soon puts two and two and two together and realizes that all the ponies in town have been ponynapped and replaced by changelings. They try to contact Princess Celestia for help but are unable to reach her which Twilight deduces is the result of Celestia protecting Canterlot from a magical comet that will pass through Equestria in three days. From there the mane six sneek behind the changelings lines and discover that the ponynapped ponies are trapped in cocoons. They also discover that Ponyvillie Town Hall has been turned into the changelings base of operations. Wasting no time they bust in there and proceed to deliver another no holds bard beatdown to the changelings. Once the changelings have been repelled the mane six free all the ponies of Ponyvillie only to find that the Cutie Mark Crusaders are still missing. At that point they are contacted by Queen Chrysalis who reveals that she has the Cutie Mark Crusaders. She then tells the mane six they have three days to come to the changeling kingdom and rescue the three fillies or something will happen to them. Despite Rainbow Dash stating it's obviously a trap and Twilight stating that the time frame overlaps with the passing of the magic comet and that Chrysalis is up to something Applejack and Rarity set out to rescue their sisters. Reluctantly Twilight tags along as well and Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, and Fluttershy do too. Spike is told to stay so he can monitor the captured changelings and that he should try to contact Celestia for backup. And thus our heroines set out on an epic quest, their goal? To reach the kingdom of the changelings within three days and rescue the Cutie Mark Crusaders as well as put a stop to whatever sort of nasty plot Chrysalis is cooking up.
The story is quite nice, it has a good pace, and everyone is written perfectly even Rainbow Dash and Applejack. There is also a short story at the end involving Pinkie Pie and Rarity. Rarity asks Pinkie Pie to model for her but while Rarity is gone Pinkie Pie buys some ice cream and stains the dress she's wearing. Hoping to hide this fact from Rarity Pinkie Pie steals Rarity's curtains and wears them just as Rarity returns. This story is perfect for anyone's who ever wanted to see Rarity and Pinkie Pie interacting more (I know I do). Both stories look like they can easily entertain anyone. There are some references and shoutouts that only older fans will get but it's still innocent enough for younger fans to safely enjoy. I'd say this is about as dark "Crystal Empire" and "Magic Duel" perhaps a little more so.
The humor is spot on, it's not spread too thick or thin. Two of my best lines from that comic are the result of such humor. One is "It's clobbering time." by Rainbow Dash when the mane six realize they're surronded and they are hiding in Twilight's house. And another is "Well that esclated quickly then ended abruptly." by Rarity after Pinkie Pie stops the changelings with her party cannon. Speaking of which that scene is my favorite because Pinkie Pie wips out her trust party cannon, points it at the changelings, and KERPOW! The changelings are covered in super sticky cake batter from one of Pinkie Pie's special cakes. I'll bet the changelings didn't see that one coming.
As a result of all that I obviously have no trouble recommending this comic to anyone who's a die hard fan of this show. You won't be disappointed.
On a relatively unrelated note the snyposis for episode 10 of season 3 (Don't let T.V. Tropes and Zap2It fool you) has been released. The episode is called "Keep Calm and Flutter On" and in it Celestia decides to reform Discord and gives Twilgiht and her friends the task of doing just that. But only Fluttershy is willing to give Discord a chance. Much like "Magic Duel" this episode's snyposis sounds too good to be true. Right now my big question is why exactly does Celestia feel like trying to redeem Discord? He had a second chance when he escaped his stone prision and after everything he did he sure as heck doesn't look like he deserves a third chance. But who knows maybe there's a reason behind of all this. Guess we'll just have to wait until January 19 to find out. I'm confident that with all the top notch writing I've seen in Season 3 from every writer so far that we won't be disappointed but only time will tell.
I concur.
