So, while watching the Destiny E3 demo, I got a little idea in my head.
It has been near a thousand years since the 9 gave their lives to save all the races of Equus. However, such a sacrifice does not come without repercussions. After the war of The Nightmare Chaos, the sun and moon have halted their rotation, all cycles have begun to stagnate. Only a narrow band around the planet is habitable, stuck in perpetual twilight. The moon to one side presides over a frozen waste, an icy spire slowly growing up towards her. On the other side, the sun looks down on charred earth, the ground directly below her a molten pit.
It is here ponies have learned to survive with their fellow races, they have had to rely more and more on their physical attributes as all the magic has slowly bled into the dark reaches of space; the rotation of the moon and sun no longer able to replenish the planets stores. Under these conditions magitech and technomagical devices were created, inventions that could be implanted into beings to help retain their innate magic as well as tools to be used to ease the pains of living. The races of Equus have been able to stave off the death of their planet with their brilliance, but they have only turned a quick death into a slow, drawn out struggle. For centuries they have hoped and prayed for Luna and Celestia to keep their promise of returning, walking back through Death's door to once again move their solar bodies and restore balance to a wrecked world. Though hope can last, time still wears upon the hopeful, filling their hearts with despair; though, sometimes despair breeds desperation, fueling new ideas.
Thus started The Project. With all the advances in magitech and technomagica (t-mag for short), the races of Equus thought it may be possible to move the solar bodies themselves or force Luna and Celestia to return. It was quickly determined that the resources needed to move just one single celestial body would exhaust everything their planet had left, and so bringing one of the 9 back was determined as the best plan of action. However, grabbing the essence of one who has been beyond the door for so long would prove to be a huge problem. Yet, once one was grabbed, bringing the other 8 back would prove slightly more trivial, though still difficult. But who to grab first? Luna and Celestia were out, they were with the objects they controlled in ages past. That left Loyalty, Honesty, Kindness, Laughter, Generosity, Love, and Magic; Magic, yes, she was the one who bound them all together, she had known them all, she was the glue, the binding, the center, she would be first.
It is in this desolate, tortured world Twilight Sparkle, Princess of Magic, finds herself.
So this is a quick idea I pounded (heh) out at 2 in the morning. Now if only I could sit down and write a first chapter to any of these ideas...
Oh, I must say, this sounds really interesting. Though you didn't spell despair correctly. Though of course, as you said yourself, two in the morning.
This is a cool idea I would love to read someting like this.
This is interesting, and sounds a lot like the basic outline of Antipodes, but wuth Twilight still alive, and ponies not hiding underground.

At least he didn't link an image in his "writing summary" to a questionable image. I had a serious idea going and had several pages outlining the plot, and somehow that image got in there...
...my consultants had a blast seeing it though at my expense...

Thanks for finding that, fixed it. Though you should have seen some of the other things written before I read through it again; they made "dispair" look tame.

Antipodes looks like an interesting story, something that might sit on my "Read Later" list for eternity. I want some good sci-fi as well; seeing a post about there needing to be more sci-fi might have helped solidify the idea.
