100 years after the failed invasion of Canterlot the changlings are forgotten by all but a few, they have now adopted an omnivore diet consiting of manticore meat and plants gathered in the Everfree forest to make up for the lack of gathering love, 50 years earlier chaglings have invented gunpowder and have created muskets and flintlock pistols, they have also made great use of steam power. The changling queen Chrysalis has deemed it necessary to reemerge, the changlings are not the only ones revealing themselves. Those left on Equis of an ancient race of myth and legend, over a billion years old have also deemed it safe to reappear after ten-thousand years of living underground due to a world conflict.

I got this idea from a discussion that i can't recall the name of, it started with changlings having better tech than ponies due to need than the human idea came to mind tell me what you think
