First, a huge thanks to my pre-readers!

Play Write—nicknamed Pencils—is the schoolteacher during Rarity's flashback, when Cheerilee is still a student.
Blue Bonnet has been seen in one episode, covering his head during the parasprite infestation.
I imagine readers know who the rest of the ponies are.
This story is set in the same (still un-named) 'verse as many of my others. While I have no intention of writing this in such a way that one needs to read those other stories to know what's happening in this one, long-time readers of mine will see familiar faces and relationships, such as Cormano and Berry Punch.
I was going to write a little bit here about how I felt about our beloved gray pegaus, but I think I'll let the story speak for itself. Let's just say that I don't like stories where she's a drooling idiot.
As for the causal racism between the tribes, it's close to canon. We've already seen that the Ponyville ponies are wary of Zecroa, and 'mule' is an insult.
But there is an important lesson in the first chapter, which one of my pre-readers noticed. Since I can't quote the lyrics here, I'll just embed a YouTube link of "You've got to be Carefully Taught."
EDIT: Forgot to mention that Under the Sparkling Sea is an actual MLP book. I haven't read it.

"Portal-verse." Yeah I know it's a reference to a completely different story, but a "portal" is more than just that one thing. Dave has a portal to Equestria (and learning about it) just as Equestria has one to Earth. Through them they can learn about each other.

The casual racism is a little off-putting. I assume this story takes place in a time before Ponyville was integrated with all three types of ponies, before Rarity's flashback in Cutie Mark Chronicles:

Yes, it's one year before that particular event. Don't forget, Derpy is coming from a cloud city, which we presume is an exclusive pegasus enclave, and moving into a small town that's largely comprised of Earth ponies.
