Review of "Of Techno and Thompsons" · 4:56am May 7th, 2014

I’ll admit, when I first heard of OctiScratch, I didn’t think much of it.

After all, it’s two mares who, combined, have less than 30 seconds of screen time in the whole SERIES.

For goodness sakes, we don’t even have the virtue of a single blip of sound to assign to them that might indicate personality. All we’ve really got are the stereotypes of the kinds of people who are DJs or strings players in a chamber quartet.

And from there, legends were born.

Seriously, I’ve been a Trekkie since I was six, I’ve moderated in the Ranma 1/2 fan community, I’ve written for Dungeons & Dragons, and I’ve never seen ANYONE create whole personalities, backgrounds, even canonized names for background characters as fast as the Bronies.

So when I started reading OctiScratch fics, I went in with fairly few preconceptions, and came out a staunch fan.

So I was disappointed when they all started getting same-y.

Fast.

So when I was asked by the author to review Of Techno and Thompsons, I was a bit reluctant. However, since they did ask nicely (I think I recall an offer of ice cream, but that could just be the late night cravings talking), I figured I’d give it a go.

So this works, in much the same way the new Captain America - Winter Soldier works; the focus is on a workable story with the unique bits fitted in. Captain America - Winter Soldier is a Cold War suspense-thriller movie with comic book bits convincingly dropped in. Of Techno and Thompsons is a…long title, but it’s also a gangland romantic comedy with pony bits dropped in.

And yes, you may savor that: Gangland…romantic…comedy.

The one caveat I might suggest exists is the notion that a standard 1911 is going to be adeptly handled by pony hooves. (Secret - It’s not) This fix nicely ignores such impossibilities and just runs with the idea of ponies wielding human-ready guns.

Also, there’s not much there so far. Two chapters does not a complete story make, so this review will also be rather incomp
