The season finally for season four is one of the best I have seen for MLP:FIM. Tons of actions, world building, character development (especially for Discord and the Princess's), and the focus of the story Tirek. But, this is not about those. It is about the first death of a character on the show (besides Sombra?? could still be alive). That character was The Golden Oaks Library. While not a character in the traditional sense it was a character of place. It has stood as an anchor point throughout these past four seasons and served as the backdrop of many events.
It served as the location of Twilight's first introduction to Pinkie's parties, the 'birthplace' of Derpy Hooves, as a launching point against Nightmare Moon, long nights of Twilight's studies, the strengthening of Rarity and Applejack's friendship, the introduction of Owlowiscious, Spike sleeping, Spike organizing books, Twilight organizing books, Books (Twilight Sparkle voice), and many more that could I could go on about.
The Golden Oaks Library became a character as the episodes progressed and we learned more about this magical world. Even when the Mane six went to far off places it felt like returning home when the Library came to view. I'm going to make a claim (probably needs more research) but I would bet that in terms of a specific location being featured (Ponyville doesn't count to broad talking about singular points on a map) the Golden Oaks Library is the most visited location on the show. After all why wouldn't it be? It is the home of the shows main character Twilight Sparkle and has become tied with Twilight is such a way that Twilight and the Library have become associated with one another.
The death of the Library has been the only time that I have become legitimately sad over anything in the course of the show. “How could that be?” you ask, “do you not feel when Fluttershy cries?” Yes, I respond, but I know that with the type of show this is whatever that made Fluttershy cry would be resolved by the end of the episode. It doesn't make them pointless, yay for character development, but the tension is removed when you realize that the problem isn't permanent. The death of the Library is the second major show altering permanent event that has occurred. The first being Twilight becoming an alicorn princess. Yes there have been many permanent changes, Rainbow Dash becoming a wonderbolt, the redemption of Luna and Discord, and the introduction of Shining and Cadance but all of these had a feeling of obvious progression and not so abrupt and game changing (closest though would be Discords redemption). It seems fitting though that the library pass on as Twilight has quite simply 'outgrown it'. Rather the library go out in a blaze of glory than fade away into the background, and in a way represents that passing of the last of Twilight's pre-princess life.
I've rambled on and I highly doubt that any one will read this (at least until I get around to finishing that Star Wars crossover I've been wanting to do). Any way in short the death of the character that was the Golden Oaks Library was a sudden one, but it will live on. After all this is a fanfiction website. How many have the library in it? If it involves Twilight it is most likely featured in at least one scene. It has become a familiar place. Should the Golden Oaks be rebuilt.
I answer in a resounding, Maybe.
If it is a new building then yes, after all it was property of Ponyville. But, the Library should not be brought back via Deuce ex Machina. It would be appropriate to grow a new tree from a seed of the old tree (much like the Great Deku Tree in Ocarina of Time).
I finish with this, we lost a friend that we didn't realized we had, and I expect that in season five that there be something, anything, about the destruction of Twilight's former home. After all she had a lot a memories there. It would make a great lesson in learning how to let go to things that are gone (would be able to allude to death with out there being any actual death).
Thanks for reading if you come across this, and remember it was M.A. Larson who had Cerberus leave Tartarus so it's all his fault. I jest :)
