Testing, testing, is this thing on? · 5:08am Jul 26th, 2014
I've discovered that this fimfiction thing has a blog built into it.
I've got nothing to say that hasn't been said by a thousand others before me. I'm just playing with my new blog.
Oh, wait. I'm supposed to be writing something thought-provoking, or at least starting a fight. Isn't that what blogs are all about? I'm sure there's a rule or something.
OK, here's my big rant: MLP:FIM is a series of stories sincerely applauding the virtues of Honesty, Laughter, Kindness, Loyalty, Generosity, and the Magic of Friendship. I think it should stay that way. That's what attracted the first fans, after all. When a writer produces a FIM fanfic in which none of the characters think or behave as they do in the series, or in which Equestria itself is nothing like the Equestria of the series for we're all supposedly fans, then why not just use OCs and an alternate setting? Instead of using a clone of, say, Twilight Sparkle with a brain transplant, just create a completely new powerful unicorn mare, and you can give her whatever backstory and worldview you want. Just be careful where you put her--Ewetopia is a weird place for ponies, for instance. They demand you wear wool there, and it itches.
I completely agree with you. One of my big objections to many writers' verses is that they don't understand the nature of the main characters. They're the chosen embodiments of Virtues of their whole civilization, and they should be written that way if one takes them seriously. This doesn't mean that they are flawless -- they're not flawless in canon. They're not even perfect embodiments of their Virtues in canon. But they are fairly virtuous, and they take their Elements quite seriously. Even Pinkie Pie.
Maybe I should write something more inflammatory, like a request that somebody put together a PMV using the 60's instrumental "Classical Gas."
Link to the music in question. It starts ...really slow. Don't give up on it.
