    The never-ending stor(e)y

For some reason this is one of the points readers of mine (including off-site ones) have mentioned several times, perhaps because it's one of those Transatlantic divides that isn't all that well known. So: when you're talking about the floors of a building:

US English: one story, two stories. The same spelling and the same plural as for the other kind of story.

Fics I reviewed in April 2024 (and one from late March)

By popular request¹ I'm bringing back this feature. My weekly Ponyfic Roundup reviews are, and will remain, on my off-site blog. It just suits me to do it that way, even if I'd probably have got significantly more of a readership had I written the blogs on Fimfiction as most (all?) other current reviewers do. However, a

    State of the Unicorn: Poor

That's poor in both senses, I'm afraid! Though before I say any more, I need to stress that I have a warm, safe home, enough to eat, internet access... the essentials, really. I am not in danger of losing those. However, I won't be doing much beyond those essentials for a while. Without going into boring details, I will very shortly be going in for dental work to be done. Which, as

    Happy Hearth's Warming Eve!

I keep my online activity to an absolute minimum on Christmas Day, so I'll take this opportunity to wish all of you reading this a Merry Christmas!¹ However life has treated you over the past year, I hope it treats you better over the next. I shall be back to reading Fimfiction on Boxing Day!

    So then, Doctor Who

Loved it! A few little quibbles, not all the acting from the newcomers was stellar and sadly parts of the gender-related stuff felt awkward and forced, eg "something a male-presenting Time Lord wouldn't understand", but I liked much more than I didn't. Plus one of my worries about the new Disney-cash-infused Who has been dispelled: this definitely did

Royal Canterlot Library · 2:22am Feb 28th, 2015

It Doesn't Matter Now has been featured by the Royal Canterlot Library. I understand that what the cool authors do when this happens to one of their fics is to remain utterly calm and take it entirely in their stride. Fortunately, I have no claim to being even remotely cool, so I can wave my arms about and jump up and down a bit. Only a bit, mind; floorboards are expensive. Anyway, part of the deal with an RCL feature is that they interview you about this and that, and you can read my answers here. If you get the reference at the end -- the little quiz as a whole, not just the last question -- you win a virtual biscuit. (I'm British. We don't really do cookies.)

Heh, what is it with authors I enjoy getting featured there lately?

Anyway, congratulations! Well earned.

Congratulations!

Are you talking about Catcher in the Rye, or is it a less obvious one?

2836736 Just shows what good taste in writing you have. :raritywink: And thank you!

2837129 Thank you! And no, it's not a JD Salinger reference at all. I'll explain here in a week or two if nobody gets it.

Well! First and foremost, congratulations! :pinkiehappy: Being one of those ignorant sorts, I don't know a huge amount about the Royal Canterlot Library website, but it was pretty clear from what you'd said that this is definitely something to be very proud of, and rightly so. I was really pleased to see that glowing write-up/review they gave for your story at the start.

Also, I honestly thought the answers you gave during the interview were extremely interesting. Not everyone can make an interview interesting, with fairly stock answers (like mine, which would probably have amounted to "PASS!" each time) so it was a joy to read. I get the feeling, from reading through it, that you also enjoyed answering those questions too!

As for those test questions at the end, well I know the 4th one is possibly a hint at a Robert Burns poem, and Proton was/is the name of your pony character, if I remember right. Beyond that my detective skills have badly let me down. :rainbowhuh:

2837223 Thank you! The interview is nicely thought out, as they send you a link to a blank Google Docs template. This means you can answer the questions at your leisure, rather than having to think of an answer on the spot as you might have to do with a spoken interview. What you don't see until the moment the feature goes up is the opening section with the curators' comments. I found out about those at the same time as everybody else!

As to how the RCL works, here's their FAQ page and a brief bio of each curator. And the questions at the end of my interview? You're right about the Burns reference, but the whole set of questions is an affectionate take-off of something else. As I mentioned to Hierophant, I'll reveal all in a week or two if nobody gets it.

Awesome! I was practically bouncing in my seat when they inducted me. (You know, in between bouts of "Me? Seriously?") Many congratulations are in order. As for the quiz, I regret that I just don't get it. Though I could probably decline a proton through hydrogen high dudgeon.

2837332 I know the feeling! I had absolutely no idea it was even a possibility; I saw a PM notification and wondered who might want to talk to me. And then it turned out to be the RCL interview request. It took me a few minutes to calm down enough to respond, to be honest. And then, after I'd sent the acceptance email, I decided to read the RCL Archives page to see who else had been inducted, and was fairly terrified!

At this point, I'd like to say some nice things about Mandatory Fun, but I'm so far behind with my RiL list that it's still waiting. I'll get round to it, promise!

woohoo, congrats man! It was well earned!

2839718 Thanks very much!

Well-deserved, and I should know. :raritywink: Keep up the good work!

2841506 Thank you! Though I'm still not entirely certain how this fic came to be. It started out as a full-on crackfic, yet somehow ended up being (a little) less crazed.

Congratulations! The honour's well-earned.

2841692 Thank you very much!
