Friendship is Card Games: Make New Friends but Keep Discord · 11:04am May 17th, 2015

If you’re blue and you don’t know where to go to, why don’t you go where fashion stews?

PUTTIN’ ON THE SMOOZE!

I like that tea parties are a thing with Fluttershy and Discord, but I do find it a bit odd that they consistently happen on the same day. I also like that the opening scene ended without background music. Really underscored the awkwardness.

Okay, let’s review: There was, of course, the Gala in “The Best Night Ever.” Then Twilight said there was a Gala “coming up” in “Sweet and Elite.” And now there’s one now. Given that the Gala is an annual event, “coming up” seems like it wouldn’t be more than a month ahead of time. So… yeah, the timeline is completely bolloxed up.
Also, there was never any doubt that Discord would be invited. Celestia loved the last Gala the Mane Six attended/ruined. Why wouldn’t she invite the spirit of chaos? (And why was Twilight surprised at the end?)

Huh. Discord’s wings actually work. Or he’s flapping them while levitating. Either or.

Applejack is an adorable mother figure. Though it would’ve been nice to have seen more of the Crusaders at the Gala. They probably made their own entertainment. Oh well, more fodder for us!

I’m surprised that reality survived the Discord/Pinkie scene. It’s no wonder she wasn’t picked to reform him. (Also, Pinkie demonstrates her greater experience in tactical espionage action. After all, she’s been in missions with Solid Sparkle.)

Ah, Tree Hugger. I enjoy her. And I suspect that her body produces THC, much in the same way that Pinkie’s produces confetti. Erf pony Hippiemancy, man. It’s a thing.

I adore Discord’s home. Though they really should’ve sent Ditzy. She’d be able to navigate the place without a problem; there would finally be enough dimensions that her eyes could focus properly! (Still, where is the place if anypony can enter it? There's probably a semi-stable portal somewhere around Canterlot or Ponyville.)

I do like this version of the Smooze. Sure, it’s no purple shoggoth, but I have a soft spot for oozes of all varieties. I would like to know where (or even when) Discord found it, though. And I’m kind of disappointed that Discord’s suit matched itself. The Dumb & Dumber reference is cute, but I was hoping for something eye-bleedingly kaleidoscopic.

Discord describes himself as only centuries old? That’s rather lowballing it. Still, he may have been saying he’s 2999 for eons now.

So there’s just a random room full of valuables where there should be a coat closet or something? Dang, Castle Canterlot must have incredible security. (Incredibly bad security is still incredible.)

After all this time, Discord still doesn’t understand Fluttershy. There’s a very nice parallel between his attempts to make her jealous here and his mind games back in “Return of Harmony.” Sadly, this time, he can’t brute force it.

Heh. Celestia laughed about Twilight’s flight capabilities. Poor Twilight. Also, damn, Maud. Rock-melting burn right there.
In all, that whole scene demonstrates that you can’t force comedy. It never goes well.

Rarity had a spare dress. I am not in the least bit surprised.

Celestia is officially the Worf of Friendship is Magic, and I really wish she weren’t. Yes, they needed to establish the Smooze was extra-especially hexproof, but did they really have to do it like that?

HA! Discord confirmed for Bolas-tier planeswalker. Knew it.

I quite enjoyed this episode, aside from the continued nerfing of Celestia. Though I suppose she may have just been enjoying the show. In any case, time to roll out my plus-thirty-four:

I don't usually quote myself, but I think this is justified:

“Nonsense, Clover,” Green scoffed. “These aren't just regular old shoggoths. They're improved shoggoths! More compact, twice as efficient, 450% cuddlier, and 98% less likely to turn against us and lay waste to our civilization. They're not destroying Cambridle – they're disassembling it so that they may reconstruct it better than the original.”

--The Education of Clover the Clever, chapter 11.

Also, I think the Gala is now Celestia's annual Allow Myself To Laugh At The Misfortune Of My Subjects-party.

Celestia is officially the Worf of Friendship is Magic, and I really wish she weren’t. Yes, they needed to establish the Smooze was extra-especially hexproof, but did they really have to do it like that?

Unless, of course, she wasn't trying, because hot DAMN this is even better than last year! :trollestia:

Discord describes himself as only centuries old?

He's correct if he's anything older than 200, might be an attempt at sounding old but not so much or something, since the whole thing was more or less awkward flirting.

Given that the Gala is an annual event, “coming up” seems like it wouldn’t be more than a month ahead of time.

Her precise line is "This has been the most fun Gala in years!" which seems to imply that there was a particularly fun one at least 2 years ago, and she described the one in season one as the best one at the time, so there was at least one they weren't invited to, but no limit on how many. (Though when I say or hear "in years" I assume at least a 2 years period in between events, not a year before last, then I would just say 2 years ago, but that might be just me)

Yeah, it's nitpicking semantics but there's not much else to do if we're trying to establish a time line.

There's also 3 potential falls in Ponyville in between the two Galas (Super Speedy Cider Squeeze 6000, Spike at Your Service - Magical Mystery Cure, Bats!), and 2 winters, one in Canterlot (Hearts Warming Eve) and one in Ponyville (Tanks for the Memories), in the same period.

There is proof enough to argue that roughly one year has passed for each season of the show, season 3 is the most ambiguous one, it's just not blatantly obvious, and one does have to accept that winter is regional and assume that a proper one is not necessarily a yearly thing that covers all of Equestria.

3075540
It's also possible "Sweet and Elite" takes place before "The Best Night Ever."
Which might explain why absolutely no one recognized any of them. It might also explain a bit of their naivety in both episodes. In "SaE" they act like they have never even seen a formal get together of any kind. (And I can definately see Pinkie as not really getting it enough that she goes to the Gala thinking it's going to be a festival.) And Fancy Pants made such a good impression, that they genuinely believed upper crust Canterlotians were more amendable to their kind of shenanigans. (I don't think I have seen Fancy Pants at either Gala. Maybe he hates them too, but is influential enough that he can miss them without repercussions, and doesn't have any real obligation to go like Celestia.)

yeah, the timeline is completely bolloxed up.

I have long since came to terms with that and realized that we can create our own timeline. While this show has better continuity than most series I have seen (i.e thing happen) , the writers are far more focused on what happens rather than the when. Making a timeline will just be up to us geeks an nerds who have way too much time on our hand

3075554

I'm not convinced. They were in fancy dresses and makeup in the first Gala, and they skedaddled as soon as things went south at Celestia's signal, leaving Celestia to deal with the fallout. No one got a proper look at them or saw their cutie marks.

The only memorable one for the attendants would have been Pinkie Pie and that's because she was trying to get everyone's attention the whole night, and singing for a bit, not for causing the disaster.

No one has any reason to remember Rarity other than Blueblood.

Rainbow Dash spent the whole night around the Wonderbolts and she would have been noteworthy only to someone trying to look for who to blame for the statues accident instead of trying to get away from them crashing all around them or running away from the animals.

Fluttershy only appeared for a brief second, after everyone was already dodging statues and running away from the animals, yelled once, and then she was gone.

AJ no one has any reason to remember, she was just a pony bringing in a cake into the hall that got caught on it all.

As for Twilight, she did nothing at all out of place, she just left with her friends. It's much simpler to assume Fancy Pants, who wasn't at the Gala, simply hadn't met her before than to assume a time bend or that everyone forgot about her.

The garden party was also an invitation only event, and they do know what an invitation is, from all the way back to Ticket Master, they're not that clueless, but they still crashed it, blatantly and openly, they even say it out loud, they were not in a state of mind where they cared at all. They had also been at their own party for the entire afternoon at that point, it's easier to argue that they had been drinking and were high on sugar than the whole thing being part of an alternate timeline, and no one knew who they were for the reasons stated above, someone might have recognized Pinkie from the Gala, or Twilight as Celestia's student, and that was about it.

Since they acted out of place on both occasions there's really no reason to swap the order of the events because of their attitudes, and the other guests at the Garden Party did took notice of who they were this time around, unlike the Gala, where things went fast and then were covered up. If the Garden Party had happened before they would have definitely known who they were at the Gala, but they were unknown there as well, so it's much more likely that the Gala happened first, and Fancy Pants just hadn't met Twilight before.

3075587

It's fun though.

And now I want to build a Smooze deck full of intimidate. You can't stop the Smooze!

Headcanon: Nobody from Canterlot is going to attend next year's gala if Twilight and her freinds are invited because they're all going to notice the pattern of Celestia passively approving of chaotic shenanigans. It's going to be a Ponyville-centric party, hosted in Canterlot by the Princess, while the nobles throw their own party. By three years from now, the gala will be an annual event hosted in Ponyville, with all three Equestrian princesses in attendance, while a party identical to the historical gala is held in Canterlot... which Celestia is no longer tradition-bound to host. Just as planned.

It's too bad the Smooze is nothing like the historical Smooze (except "nothing" being able to stop it). Now anyone who wants a reality-devouring abomination is going to have to spend a paragraph of exposition reconciling them.

Is it me, or did Fluttershy and Tree Hugger seem less like friends and more like, you know, they were on a date? Especially in the scene before the gala where they were eating together. I guess somepony's got a canonical special somepony now!

Even if Tree Hugger did seem like a shallow, vapid hippie strawman, whose ideas just happened to be right. I was kind of hoping for her idea to be bogus and Discord would try to call her out on it only for Fluttershy to say "So what? She's hot and into the same stuff I am and I was enjoying my night with her, who cares if her mysticism is right or not?"

I was also hoping for someone to catch onto what Discord was doing and try to call him out on it earlier, only for him to keep going anyways. Since he was subtle as a brick. Still, kid's show I guess.

------

Good Vibrations: Just about all your songs do way more powerful things with their verse counters than that, so I can't see this being useful. I guess it's a panic button against dying this turn, but that purpose would be better served without the activation cost (or, you know, by casting a spell that directly gives life or prevents damage).

Canterlot Herald: Funny tie-in of flavor and ability. Good if your deck loves +1/+1 counters I guess.

Ethereal Slide: This isn't an indictment of your card, since there's others that do the same thing, but I am curious: If you cast a Blink style effect on an attacking or blocking creature, what happens? Do they return still attacking/blocking? I'm guessing no.

Disturbing Reflection: Strictly better than Thought Scour.

Abrupt Departure: It's instant speed Time Ebb that either misses the guy you were aiming for or costs 1U extra. Then again, I guess that's what you sign up for with a chaotic deck.

Yoink!: Vampire Hexmage, only without the vampire. Or the mage. So it's basically just a hex (but not that Hex).

Magma Burn: When would I ever use this in red. Just... red has so many better options. Oh wait, Stuffy Doll. That's one.

Discord’s Anecdote: Wheel of Fortune, chaos style.

Shake the Camera: This would fit so perfectly in a real un-set, I'm not even kidding.

Swooping Fin-Skimmer: 4RR: The game ends this turn if you're playing monored, probably. Use this ability only if your opponent has no creatures with flying or reach. (Really just an amazing creature in general for monored).

Magical Manifestation: I was all ready to call this a green Stone Rain before I noticed you thought of that and limited it to your own lands. In which case it's just very... meh.

Thick Air: Now that is what you want a chaotic spell in your deck to look like. Perfection.

Doodleburg Rancher: Changeling tribal for life! Except unless you actually print a crayon creature, I'm not sure Changelings can count as it.

The Smooze: Sadly he's an accurate representation of this episode's smooze, rather than the original.

Arcane Periscope: Nasty countermeasure for the right opponent, if you're running the right deck. Doesn't hit enchantments though.

Hazy Daze: That is the goofiest equipment or enchantment removal I've ever seen. Plus it stops anything that relies on counters. Looks effective though. (Extra hilarious if you used it to nerf a beefed up Kor Spiritdancer but have to leave her as a 2/4)

Dust Bunnies: Another good one. Sadly you need at least one target to get your tokens.

Wrath of Discord: Not sure when you'd want this over other wrath effects, but it definitely fits him. I couldn't see this being designed another way.

Flagrant Hypocrisy: So much abuse potential.

...

...

I'm gonna do it.

Unstoppable Smooze 10
Legendary Creature — Eldrazi Ooze
Indestructible, Shroud
Unstoppable Smooze has Annihilator X, where X is equal to its power.
Whenever Unstoppable Smooze attacks, put three +1/+1 counters on it.
0/7
Nothing can stop the Smooze.

edit: I changed it to shroud because I realized what would happen if you buffed him.

Yoink kills a planeswalker for B and draws a card, at instant speed. That's pretty not bad.

3075989
It also activates Dark Depths on turn 1. Leading to a turn two win unless your opponent has 1-drop creature destruction.

I am not surprised you read Erfworld. More people should, it's a good comic. I really want to do slash see a cross-over where Twilight gets summoned by a variant "Summon Perfect Caster" spell.

Yeah, Yoink! is waaaaaaaay too powerful, especially as a can-tripping instant. I think it should probably be "Remove all counters from target creature, artifact or enchantment" instead of just "permanent".
(3076201 Even worse; I go first; play Dark Depths + Mox Jet + Yoink! + Mox Ruby + Chaos Charm/Crimson Wisps/Fever Charm/Reckless Charge/Unnatural Speed = win! With very little that can be done about it. Magical Christmas Land sure but possible.)

I read the name Align the Chakras and my first thought was "Open ALL the Chakra gates!" and then I read what it does and I think "Yeah, that's about right, maybe more +5+5 but that'd be too powerful".

On Doodleburg Rancher; I will be upset with you if you don't make any "crayon" spells. It will be possible, if we ever get a crayon scene like the velvet scene from one episode which I can't remember at the moment.

Nothing can stop The Smooze! (Unless it's green)

3075819

Ethereal Slide: This isn't an indictment of your card, since there's others that do the same thing, but I am curious: If you cast a Blink style effect on an attacking or blocking creature, what happens? Do they return still attacking/blocking? I'm guessing no.

You are correct in thinking they are no longer attacking or blocking! When the creature leaves the battlefield and is returned it comes back as a 'new' instance, as if cast from your hand. So unless the effect that removed the creature in the first place specifically says it comes back attacking or blocking (such as "Exile target attacking creature. During its owner's next declare attackers step return that creature to the battlefield tapped and attacking") it will not be involved in combat at all.

Disturbing Reflection: Strictly better than Thought Scour.

Ahh but Disturbing Reflection is a Sorcery instead of an Instant. The timing difference is very important.

Abrupt Departure: It's instant speed Time Ebb that either misses the guy you were aiming for or costs 1U extra. Then again, I guess that's what you sign up for with a chaotic deck.

If you play it off Chaotic you might not even hit a Creature at all! Maybe your own Enchantment! Got to love "non-land" clauses.

Doodleburg Rancher: Changeling tribal for life! Except unless you actually print a crayon creature, I'm not sure Changelings can count as it.

I think "Crayon" might wind up being a "'spell' only" subtype like "Arcane" is.

On Celestia being unable to stop the Smooze -- I wonder how seriously she tried, considering how much she seems to have enjoyed all the mayhem Discord and his ooey gooey plus-one caused? :trollestia: :facehoof:

Also, it's clear that while Twilight respects, admires and loves (exact Eros/Agape ratio depending on your taste for Twilestia) Celestia, she doesn't quite get the Sun Princess. Nice to see Celestia is dropping the God-Queen role more often with her newest fellow alicorn, too!

3076633

Hmm, you seem to have read the cards more carefully than I did. Because I missed key details of Disturbing Reflection and Abrupt Departure, and you didn't.

My two-card turn 2 win combo actually has some chance of being drawn, unlike your nonsense 5 card combo with multiple moxes.

Also: I cast Foil, Force of Will or Mental Misstep on Yoink! Now I've got however long it takes you to get a second Yoink! or Vampire Hexmage to put down an island I can use to cast Unsummon on Marit Lage (he'll vanish, Dark Depths is still dead and if I time it right your haste spell will fizzle too).

3075989
3076201
3076633
Well, never let it be said I can't admit my own mistakes, even if Wizards made them too. Yoink! will be adjusted to keep Marit Lage under the ice and planeswalkers from fleeing in droves.

3075665
I wouldn't really expect most of the ponies there to remember them from the gala. But if the show is taken to be in roughly chronological order, then they should have remembered them from the ceremony after Discord was resealed. That was a very large, and very public event, and probably was in the news for some time after. It's REALLY hard to swallow the idea that someone as affluent as Fancy Pants would not recognize Rarity after something like that. Even if the rest of the nobles are so stuck up as to ignore a massive ceremony honoring 6 heroes, Fancy Pants would likely be interested in meeting them. To say nothing of the fact that Fluttershy modeled for Photo Finish and Rarity's work was featured by Hoity Toity. (Fluttershy is arguable, as she was always done up for a photo shoot, and it's not uncommon to see a model out of makeup and costume and not recognize them at all. I think Fancy Pants is discerning enough, but it's still possible.)
However, taken in anachronistic order, the Garden Party may very well have been actually fairly soon after Luna's return. An outdoors party like that would want good weather, so summer is ideal, and social events tend to get bigger as the year goes on, so it's not impossible that the Gala occurs after the Garden Party. That, of course, doesn't mean that they had to have been attended in the same year, but if they were, it would fit.

3077705
That still doesn't explain why Twilight Sparkle, Celestia's personal student, born and raised in Canterlot, didn't know how to behave at a garden party. Or why nopony recognized the princess's right hoof. There's being a studious shut-in, and then there's utter obliviousness.

Also, if interseasonal achronicity is a thing, then I officially give up on trying to figure any of this out.

3077723

That still doesn't explain why Twilight Sparkle, Celestia's personal student, born and raised in Canterlot, didn't know how to behave at a garden party. Or why nopony recognized the princess's right hoof.

...Yup. No matter how you look at it, that was just plain weird.

3076716
Thing is your two turn two card combo isn't; you need a source of black mana to play the original version of Younk! , so you need at least a third card to cast it turn one (such as the Mox) or it being three turn gambit by having another land, say something boring like a Swamp.
If you want a really pie-in-the-sky combo here's a seven card turn one combo; Swamp, Dark Ritual, x2 Helm of Awakening, x2 Myr Retriever and Grinding Station.

3076754
To be fair to the Wizards team they did own up to their mistake on the Hexmage but their only tools to fix things with after print are a Banhammer and a Limiterwrench, both of which they don'the like using unless they really need to.

3077723 You could explain it by making Twilight very reclusive to the point of isolation. If the nobles never see her they might not know her and Twilight never going to events means she never practises the rules of parties.

I see what you did with Cancelled Order :pinkiehappy:

3077723

Well, that's not that hard to explain, maybe she was a little drunk and had been stuffing herself with cake. And then Rainbow and Pinkie go:

"You know what?, we should totally crash this party!"

And then Twilight just goes:

"We really should totally crash this party!"

And that was it, Occam's razor, stupidity before malice, etc. Come on guys, this has to have happened to you at least once in your life.

Once Fancy actually addressed her directly she actually acted acted very properly (if a little too happy with herself) but, like I said, her mind probably wasn't all there.

As for the seasons, yes, they are iffy, but there's enough repetition for at least one of them to draw some lower limits of how much time has passed.

Or why nopony recognized the princess's right hoof.

Nopony even recognized her as a princess herself in Manehattan, maybe she's just a very plain looking mare by pony standards (Or used to be, before the wings thing).

3077761

Oh crap, I forgot that you can't play Dark Depths and your swamp on the same turn. Uhh, crud. Well, with only one Mox you'll still be attacking with 20 flying damage on turn 2, which is probably a win most of the time. I hope it is anyways, I've never played vintage but I get the impression it's kinda nuts.

So...we had a crayon moment in Season 4 with Maude's back story. Can that be a crayon spell? I really want more crayon spell because that seriously sounds fun.

What's missing is a global enchantment to mirror everypony's TOTAL CLUELESSNESS about Discord's being upset. That aspect ruined the whole episode for me.

Something like: "Attacking creatures can't be blocked, but deal no direct damage by attacking," maybe.
