How Rarity Broke My Heart · 11:35am Sep 13th, 2015
Season five is back, and the newest episode showed one of the characters finally achieving a series long dream. Rarity opens a boutique in Canterlot, becomes the sensation she deserves to be and finds her dream is not all she imagined it would be.
The set up and rising action through the first two acts was nothing special, but as Rarity was caught in he trap of success I was enraptured, I was wishing with all my heart that she would remember that she was an artist, not a craftsman.
When Rarity finally remembered her art, I was cheering. I was calling at the screen "You are an ARTIST!!" She didn't forget who she is, she was the smart, artistic, wonderful woman she had shown herself to be in previous seasons. She broke my heart when I thought that she would have her dream perverted to mass produced products. She won me back when she was willing to give up her apparent dream to stay true to her vision.
Rarity, when written right, deserves to be an icon, an exemplar of not only feminists, but all artists. She is a fantastic character. Tabitha St Germane should be proud, Rarity now has two episodes that exemplify a true artist staying true to her vision. Art of the Dress and now Canterlot Carousel are MLP at it's best. I haven't cheered for an episode like I have for this since Hurricane Fluttershy.
She didn't give up her dream, she forced the elite to take her at her level. The drama flowed naturally, the morale at the end was not only completely appropriate but was completely un-forced. This is why I love MLP:FIM.
Long live Rarity, may she continue to be an example to us all.
PS: Applejack was totally being a good girlfriend, but the Rarijack shipper in me will never die
