I've said before that I draw parallels between my writing and real life. I won't share all of the personal details, but basically I run away from problems before they happen. Each person deals with grief in their own way, and sometimes that happens even before the event that triggers grief. I'm sure most people have experienced it in some way, and it's been somewhat of a spanner in the works for a while now. It's tough to vent about the fears and struggles in my life, but in some way or another, it's always worth it to let it out. For a while now, Wes has been running away from something in the story, and while that thing may have been changing since the day the story started, it's always been a mixture of those elements at the same time. Family, friends, quarrels between both, and even grief, are all things that lead to the escapism that Wes is taking now. This story came about as a way to explore the world I have been escaping to for quite some time, and yet I feel that it's not a completely bad thing either.
Escapism is okay in small doses, and I would love to see Wes get his wish in the story, but as seen now, life sometimes finds a different path to take. It's a windy and unpredictable road we all must travel, and I'm proud to march on through it.
With all that out of the way, there are a few things I reference in my stories from time to time that I sometimes like to toss in as easter eggs for some of my fans that share the same interests.
Adria is the name of a character from Stargate SG-1. She worked with evil ascended beings to take over two galaxies, and when I was trying to think up a name and description for my new character, that name just popped right into mind. Maybe it was the fire thing. Coincidentally, the actress who plays her, also plays Inara in Firefly, a show with which I am sure more of you are familiar. The inspiration for Adria the dragon actually comes from a collection of wisdom and intuition that I figure such an old character might have. Wrap that up in a cute scaly package and you have yourself a dragon with mind control powers. This is a small headcanon bit I added that Dragons get their magic from elsewhere, and its effects are less visible. Gems are often seen as magical in the pony world, and dragons eat a lot of them, so why wouldn't they be able to cloudwalk and have siren-like powers?
The Stray Sheep is the bar in the game (C/K)atherine. It was just a random venue chosen that I felt would fit in in the area the characters are in. I mentioned in a previous chapter that there were business ponies and big buildings in Cloudsdale, and why not have a Griffon embassy there?
Anyway, I'm glad I could get some writing out finally. Sorry it's been so long!
