Happy birthday, The Legend of Zelda! · 6:28pm Feb 21st, 2016
On the 21st February 1986, The Hyrule Fantasy: Zelda no Densetsu was released in Japan on the Famicom Disk System. (Tangent: why isn't The Hyrule Fantasy the name of the series? Not every Zelda game takes place in Hyrule, yes, but not every Zelda game has Zelda in it either.) This was the same year as Kid Icarus and Metroid, but unfortunately Nintendo seems to have forgotten about all of their anniversaries, so I suppose the fans will have to celebrate by themselves.
I suppose I should tell you my story with this series...
It started when I used to watch other people play DS games. One such game was Phantom Hourglass, but since I had never heard of LOZ before I assumed it was some kind of Animal Crossing game. When I later learned a bit more about the series, I thought that Link's name was Zelda for a while. I was mind-blown when I discovered his actual name.
Then Spirit Tracks came out, and I wanted to buy it, but I didn't. Fast-forward to November 2011, and I attempted to buy it again, but I was too nervous to for some reason. Before my failed attempt to buy Spirit Tracks, I had downloaded Four Swords 25 Anniversary Edition and The Minish Cap, but was too nervous to play them too. So what did I do? Look up spoilers for all the games on the wiki, of course! (I still managed to be surprised by Skyward Sword when I played it in November 2012 - March 2013, mind; that game completely blew my mind.)
On February 11th 2012, I brought Pokémon Platinum, Kirby Mass Attack and The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, but ST is the only one I still own. A day later, I finally decided to play it. But then, when I reached the Marine/Ocean Sanctuary a few days later, I just... stopped playing it, and couldn't pick it back up until August 2014. In the mean time, I looked up even more spoilers, and even watched the ending cutscene on YouTube several times.
Also, in November 2012, I did a 3-heart challenge of Phantom Hourglass, but in the cutscene before the final boss, my 3DS randomly decided to stop working. I lost Four Swords, The Minish Cap and Link's Awakening; TMC is the only one I've replaced, on Wii U Virtual Console.
I've now played every main Zelda game except Four Swords Adventures and Tri Force Heroes, but I've only completed - in order of release - FS(25), TWW(HD), TMC, TP, PH, ST, SS and ALBW.
...Bit of an unusual story, isn't it?
