Finding Masterpieces · 12:46am Nov 28th, 2016
Every so often I'll write something that will make me go "THAT'S SO GOOD!" It's when the pieces of the puzzle align in such a way that makes a set of twenty-eight chapters all worth it once the twenty-ninth is written. I'm finding myself trying to aim for that feeling more and more when I'm writing, going as far to scrap things that I previously thought were good when instead something better came along. It takes more time to do so but I find that to be worth it.
Not only is it worth it but it's a form of pleasure for myself. It's the equivalent of getting a really hard achievement in a game - which I am a bit of a freak about. Unlocking that hidden gem in the creation process fills my brain with an ecstasy that I can only assume is the same reason people use drugs. I've often found myself wondering if I should start doing drugs just to see if it feels as good.
Of course, I would assume the term masterpiece is only given when others find it a masterpiece as well. Which leads me to wonder if Leonardo da Vinci had a painting that he considered a masterpiece that was not one of his more well known pieces. "Oh, sure Mona Lisa is good and all, but check out my Leda and the Swan! It's a lady and a SWAN!"
I'm sure anyone on this website who writes frequently can find themselves in my shoes, when something just clicks and you write seven thousand words in one sitting. It's a good feeling.
That's all I wanted to say, a little gloating.
