Polyamory question · 2:53pm May 26th, 2017

I'll analyze the polls later, but for now I thought of something that I can't decide on. Should I have a wedding for each member or few members, or should I wait until the end and have one giant ceremony?
I'm not even sure who all will be in the marriage by the end. I think Luna, Celestia, Chrysalis, and Twilight; not sure if any others.

Individual weddings sound better.

All sound good to me:applejackunsure:

Twilight velvet

It depends on the spouse. Some would want there own ceremony, some would want to share, and some wouldn't care. Decide on based on their personality and any extenuating circumstances.

Herd marriage, go!

I say single wedding. You wouldn't be asking this if you were planning something that'd have made multiple weddings worthwhile, such as:

1. Putting decent distance between them. For example, wedding with Celestia and Luna marks the end of the Sisters Arc and the beginning of courting Chrysalis.
2. Making the weddings significantly different from each other. Example: Celestia's wedding is fairly normal while Luna's is a bat pony orgy and Chrysalis wants to claim them publicly in a domination/impregnation session.

4547789 I suppose! Like Twilight would probably want to when Celestia did, while Chrysalis might demand a whole ceremony all to herself; all shall love Bug-Horse and despair!

4547767 I guess joining marriages could work!

4547923 There is a bit of distance, in fact you shouldn't assume that Celestia will give in next after Luna! That does sound like how Chrysalis would want things though.

4547992 I was thinking that it would make sense to get Twilight first and have her help in seducing Celestia. You did indicate at the end of Luna's chapter they'd be going after Celestia next though.

And of course a wedding would be a good attempt as baiting Chrysalis out. I can't stop thinking about the idea of just publicly announcing their intention to marry Chrysalis, scheduling a wedding and sweetening the pot with sex. Does not quite make sense for it to work, but interesting nonetheless.

I would argue for the opposite. In order to have one giant group marriage you will need to have every participant be already individually verified and involved with each of the others (barring any existing ties we don't yet know about). For instance, in a single, mass wedding between Shiny, Cady, Moony, Celly, and Chryssy, Chrysalis would not only have to be vetted by each individual party, but also make efforts to be involved with each. Individually. (Yes, I'll keep saying it.)

However, for a series of weddings, you could have Shiny and Cady first add Moony. Then, when Celly wants to join, Shiny, Cady, and Moony can get involved in the courting as a group, which places a bit less stress on the individual justifications. Then, when Chryssy enters the picture, she approaches the group, rather than four entirely separate parties.

Essentially, I feel that bringing every individual together in a single massive wedding would require a much more complicated and messy buildup.

4548052 ...You have some strange assumptions.

If the question "all together or individually?" is even being asked, then it's obvious that the default alternative would be a series of weddings one after another after the herd itself has been assembled. Especially since they already got Luna and the question of marrying hasn't come up. If anyone's getting hitched before everyone has joined, then it's my point #2.

Also, where exactly is it implied that either form of the marriage would be everyone to everyone, not Shining and Cadance to each of the others individually?

One giant ceremony! Go big or go home.

Oh they will be attempting Celestia, but I figure she probably has more willpower than the others, since she's way older. I'm going by the idea that Luna wasn't conscious during her banishment, which means Celestia has had a lot more time to become set in her ways.

I know how Chrysalis will get involved/baited, and I'd like to think it makes sense, and it doesn't require that Chrysalis become boring reform. The wedding bait idea is funny, but I have a different way of baiting in mind.

4548052
That makes sense and is a good point. It's not polyamory if every member of the relationship isn't at least okay with every other member, and I want to keep it true to the title. Maybe learning to trust each other can be fun though!

Also, where exactly is it implied that either form of the marriage would be everyone to everyone, not Shining and Cadance to each of the others individually?

It is true that polyamory can consist of having multiple romantic partners without the partners necessarily being involved with one another, so I should have been more clear with how I imagine it being defined 'legally' in Equestria. The intent is that they won't add a member to the relationship unless they are good with every existing member, which hopefully should make for some fun interactions when trying to get Celestia and Twilight to trust Chrysalis. Having Chrysalis added first might actually make it more fun for that reason, so I'm considering that.

'Go big or go home' sounds like Luna's criteria for choosing which guards to have fun with.

Well, the question of each individually or all together was in the original blog post, so there's definitely a focus on how multiple characters can come together through marriage.

As to the idea of Cady and Shiny being at the center of several otherwise non-connected marriages seems like it would make the situation even more complicated. Sure, you avoid having to, say, figure out how Chrysalis and Luna reach a relationship and emotional accord to each other, but you're trading that for having to balance how each character feels about sharing their significant ones with someone completely unrelated. Which, in my mind, means some interesting mental gymnastics on the part of the characters - since we are talking committed polyamorous relationships - or similar gymnastics on the story's part, in order to explain why/how pony society is okay with this weird spiderweb of commitment.

And I'm not saying this kind of thing can't be done; it just has to be considered how complex the author is willing to let the story get.

Definitely would like one large ceremony.

Also, have you sent me any PMs recently? I haven't gotten any notifications, and I just wanna make sure.

I was originally thinking it'd be fun to see one big one buuuut, this is something neither Celestia or Luna have done in forever. I think they'd want to cherish the ceremony and have individual ones so they can each have their 'dream wedding' as it were.

Could also be funny if Chrysalis has her own idea of a ceremony and seeing how that turns out.

I guess joining marriages could work!

Well if we go down that route, there's just the issue with Shining's dad Night Light.

I don't think he'd mind getting five other mares in a relationship. :P
Though if it was my story, considering Shining would have four alicorns as wives and a changling queen they could always just genderswap Night Light, but I understand that's not for everyone...

maybe a few different ones like some might want there own and others might not mind sharing

You seem to be going for more of the herd dynamic for this so I would suggest having a mix of individual and group weddings. As you said before certain pairings are going to be more interested in joining at the same time, while others may take longer to be fully accepted so it would seem to make sense to bring them together individually or in small groups.

The trouble there is going to be in making the weddings feel individually distinct without much/any re-tread that people will have to read through. In that case, it might actually be better to simply gloss over or time-skip past weddings that you don't feel you can make both interesting and unique.

I think Luna would have an easier time connecting with Chrysalis than Celestia or Twilight, since they sort of have something in common in that they both kicked Celestia's plot and tried to take over Equestria! :rainbowwild:

The show doesn't really define it, so I guess it can be anything. I think Equestria is too enlightened for marriage to be a legal concept. Ponies marry because they love each other, not so they can file taxes jointly, get extra benefits at work, or share possessions in a legally-binding fashion. I don't think the law in Equestria would specify how ponies structure their relationships. The only thing they might have is laws against incest, but that's assuming they don't have magic to avoid defects.

This is how I'm treating it in-story: Poly relationships are rare but have never been illegal or looked down upon. Incest is illegal, but the law is out-dated, because magic has been developed to ensure foals are defect-free. Society has never looked down on incest for purely moral reasons.

I haven't because I've been trying to decide how to work the next chapter still. I very hope to have a chapter for editing during the weekend.

4548612
Well, they aren't limited to just one male in the relationship. I think you're thinking of polygamy rather than polyamory.

4548651
Yeah, that's what I'm thinking now, like a few depending on what order things happen in, how quickly things happen, etc.

4548680
I'm sure Chrysalis could come up with a unique wedding, but the others perhaps less so. I guess I'll have as many weddings as I can without retreading, and maybe gloss over a few later on if they wouldn't add much.

4548770
Ok that's fine. Just so you know though, I'm at a tournament this weekend, so I won't be able to start until a little late at night.

Well, they aren't limited to just one male in the relationship. I think you're thinking of polygamy rather than polyamory.

I'm not really familiar with either term. I more just kinda want to see Night Light gender swapped as that doesn't really happen like ever, but again not for everyone, and I as a reader don't even know if you would include Twilight Velvet in this anyway, given it's your story.
