I'm not entirely sure whether I want to do this yet but I'm thinking about adding more than just light/dark themes. One of the issues here is that extra options explicitly leads to more complexity in managing the site's design, and I don't want to run into a situation where it becomes a hassle to make them all look good. Currently these are all between around 5 and 10 variables changed for the
You may have heard on the grapevine that unfortunately the site is most likely being suspended from Patreon. After certain events that transpired last year, it was likely this would happen one day so I can't say I'm surprised and truthfully it's my fault for not having more of a contingency plan for this prepared. I am not particularly angry or anything at Patreon for this as I understand only
I am posting this in a personal rather than site blog for a couple of reasons. For one, as the situation changes we may have to change our approach, meaning I’d rather not have constant blog posts about how we’re trying to deal with things. Secondly, I don’t feel like fanning flames more here on what I ultimately consider to be some fairly minor changes.
I really need to one day sit down and try and create a legitimate archive of as much as possible. It annoys me very much I never did ;( Maybe archive.org can help.
The site logo in that third one looked really classy. I sometimes like to go to the Wayback Machine and look at old, archived versions of the site. I miss the cute, FIM-inspired icons, like that book and (in another previous version that's not shown here) the scroll. They just look so warm inviting.
Nah, really though; I may just have joined at the 4th iteration, according to these screenshots, but it's been a great ride. Thanks for letting us both ride and continue to ride it.
I have an idea if you send me all of the images of the site I can create a website with them all in archive format, free of charge, additionally it would be hosted by me for the entire world to see 24/7/365, as I have my own personal web server located at my site
Oh man, separate tracking and following, dashboard being a 1 stop location for everything/one you're following, banners, fic specific banners. I miss all these things. (although I wasn't around when the fic specific banners were brought out)
Gawd, I miss the old days. Back before people were panicking every other day about the end of the fandom, or that the fandom is dying. Back when FIMFiction had banners, EqD hadn't quite hit 100m yet, back before I was even close to being as good a writer as I am now. When Progress was in progress, when Through the Eyes of Another Pony was still in its first batch of updates...
Yeah, it's a shame you keep trying to make the site look more generic with each new update. I mean, sure, you give us new functionality, but you also keep stripping away visual distinctiveness. I don't think the Law of Equivalent Exchange necessarily applies to website design--it can look good AND be more functional.
A few more that were laying around. If you did want to make an archive of pictures, these might be a good start! (Bringing back the banner page'd be nice, too.)
Aww, I miss the site banners... it's a shame that they had to go due to storage space. But please Knighty, don't ever remove the banners for groups. They make you feel welcome and at home, something which very few other fanfiction manages to do.
Man, what a throwback. I remember when you had the Trixier banner up originally to get Seth to post about it on EQD. 😛 Crazy how much it's changed in the past 6 years.
I remember that was the banner from when I first discovered this site and started reading tons of fimfics. I distinctly recall reading My Little Alicorn and The Immortal Game with that banner in the background, and it just gives me a massive dose of nostalgia whenever I look at it again. I really miss the old 2011/2012 layouts. I get why they're gone, and I like a lot of the functionality added to the site since then (the Library is so good) but I still miss them.
Looking at that last one made me tear up a bit. Loved how it used to look with that big banner that used to depict beautiful images of the ponies and the Fimfiction.net logo. Good god, how times have changed. It wasn't that long ago, but it's so nostalgic.
Oh the nostalgia! Keep up the great work, and an Archive would be cool :)

Oh the nostalgia!
Plus old FiMfictions!
So this must be the previous updates the site went through way back when. Neat. Site has really come a long way since that first image.

Rip story #14.

I still miss those banners at the top. They might have been cumbersome, but they were fun.
On a side note, is there a way to change the color of the groups/user/settings/etc bar at the top to anything other than blue?

I prefered the banners.... it just...... Knighty they gave the site a feeling of warmth.
This describe how I feel

agreed.
The site has still come a long way.

Oh I agree. The site is much cleaner and has come a long way.
That first one though... On the Wayback Machine it seems to be broken entirely.
Oh man, those backgrounds though. I miss those backgrounds.

If you want the banners back you can always use FimFiction Advanced: https://www.fimfiction.net/blog/741993/bug-fixes
:)

What's cool is that you posted that right after Sollace commented

IKR :P Was gonna say something but decided not to edit/message too much
Didn't even see their message until after xD
Wow. Unexpected shot of nostalgia, and that's coming from someone who never saw the first two.

Is it still possible to have the banner at the top? If it is, what do I have to do to get it?
The site has gone through many a change, and she's only, like, 7 years old. Oh how they grow so fast!
Well, you know, you could always ask what screenshots site members have tucked away! I'm sure a bunch of us have some.
Most of these weren't taken by me, but I nabbed 'em when I saw them. (They are mostly tytyvm's.)

Also, >dat mIRC icon.
Oh Celestia, I miss that banner.
wow. the nostalgia trip....
sidenote: just noticed that the formatting icons for comments box spells "biusht"...... I see bullshitdo you still have the banner credits somewhere, now that its gone from the bottom of the site?
My newly created group (The Pony Media Time Capsule Project) May be able to help with this!
Here are some screenshots I've saved.

I think the banner I miss the most is the one from this screenshot (if someone has a better screencapture let me know!):
