For my most recent commission piece, some seriously cute Spike love was requested. I like Spike a lot, and Spike The Dog is really interesting, mostly because he's a very separate character from Spike The Dragon. It's weird to think that they just made Sci-Twi's dog able to talk and decided "There, now Spike is in this!"... But it's not Spike! Not the Spike we know. He was a little doggo prior to suddenly gaining intelligence and the ability to speak.
What would that be like? How would that feel?
I think I tackled this whole thing pretty decently. And dogs are cool, so there's a lot of good dog stuff in here that made me smile as I wrote. It's hard to be super serious while writing about dogs. I think I get why Dean Koontz has dogs in his novels all the time.
Also, for those of you wondering, Spike's mom is a Bluetick Coonhound. They've got some similar features to Spike, some pretty wide color variations, and are also cute. They are typically hunting and working dogs, more common in the Southeastern United States.
A tiny pup! So wrinkly!
You beautiful man.
It should be noted, there are some big differences between hounds and dogs.
All hounds are technically dogs, but not all dogs are hounds.
Hounds have some unique behaviours, tend to be more human dependent, have more advanced language structures in the brain, (requiring a brain bump) and many specialised features after years of breeding. Smarter, more personable, hounds are just really advanced dogs.
I prefer the company of hounds, even though I love all dogs.
Thank you again so very much for writing this for me :D
