My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Season 7 Catch-Up Reviews: Episodes 17-19 (SPOILERS) · 4:01pm Sep 16th, 2017

It's catch-up review time! These won't be long reviews, since I don't really have time to sit and do the whole long form review thing and I've got back episodes to catch up on reviewing.

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic - Season 7 Episode 17: "To Change a Changeling"

In which Starlight and Trixie meet Thorax's evil twin.

Starlight and Trixie decide to pay Thorax a surprise visit, and discover that he and the hive are having issues with his brother Pharynx, who doesn't approve of the way the Changelings have changed and is going out of his way to make everybug miserable. There's also a Dread Maulwurf ravaging the badlands that are getting less bad and more green and...good...since Chrysalis' evil magic and the Changelings' love-sucking has all stopped. In standard "two characters solve a friendship problem" fashion, each one has their own ideas about how to reconcile the brothers, Starlight's plan makes everything a million times worse, then her hasty, panicked plan to fix things leads to the Changelings remembering how strong they are together and Pharynx realizing his love of the hive, causing him to finally transform into a dark Neo-Changeling Prince...the Luna to Thorax's Celestia.

We need more Starlight and Trixie episodes. Full stop. And we absolutely need to get Maud in on this action soon. Anyway, 9/10.

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic - Season 7 Episode 18: "Daring Done?"

In which the writers blatantly crib from FiMFiction except they don't.

Rainbow Dash learns that A.K. Yearling is retiring, and drags Pinkie Pie halfway across Equestria to try to get to the bottom of it. It turns out that Daring Do is equina non grata in southern Equestria (which is...kind of all over the place, it's Egypt except it's also South America except it's...what? I just don't know, but it's mostly Egyptish), where her books aren't sold. The ponies in the village of Somnambula hate Daring Do because she's caused untold property damage and stolen local treasures.

Except not really, because she was trying to stop the bad guys from doing all that, and her reputation is being trashed by Caballeron, who's stirring up trouble among the locals by spreading filthy lies and slander about Daring Do in petty revenge for her books ruining his credibility. Or something. We also get another legend of a pony named Somnambula who saved a prince from a Sphinx by basically doing a trust exercise.

I'm revising my score for this episode to 8/10.

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic - Season 7 Episode 19: "It Isn't The Mane Thing About You"

In which Rarity has a hair malfunction.

Rarity is dramatically preparing for a photo shoot which will feature her mane, and she's...well...being incredibly vain while at the same time helping shopkeepers around Ponyville improve their business with her sense of style. Unfortunately, just before the scheduled shoot, she winds up with a mane full of Pinkie Pie's super sticky silly string.

Rarity and Pinkie visit Zecora to get a super shampoo for Rarity and a super magical mess remover for Pinkie. They get the two mixed up, and...Rarity ends up with the mother of all bad hair days.

Without her mane and forced to wear a cloak, nopony in Ponyville recognizes Rarity. Ignored and overlooked, Rarity feels down in the dumps and ramps up her dramatic tendencies. She begs Twilight and Starlight to help her with magic, with hilariously disastrous results. Ultimately, she's forced to accept that there's no easy fix for this: she's going to have to wait for her mane to grow out again, and the photo shoot with Photo Finish is, well...finished. Her friends aren't much help--none of them can sugarcoat this absolute disaster, and their ideas for a replacement mane don't pan out. After being comforted by her friends, Rarity decides the best way to salvage this situation is...to give herself a PUNK MAKEOVER!!

Months later, when her mane and tail have returned to normal, Rarity learns that Photo Finish secretly followed her around Ponyville and took pictures of her helping ponies out while rocking her punk look--which has now become all the rage in Ponyville.

This was an excellent episode, a lot of fun, and I give it a 10/10. Pony at its finest, right here!

Favorite scene: Rarity yelling at the Random Spooky Eyes in the background of the Everfree Forest. Also, OUCH Fluttershy: "I guess it's harder when she feels like the lemon." OUCH.

That last episode was such a celebration of everything that makes Rarity amazing, I was half expecting her to sprout wings.

I'd be lying if I said that I didn't take some sadistic pleasure from watching Rarity squirm in this one.

Ok, so, Punk Rarity (and by extension, punk versions of OCs) is sure to become a fad.

I just have to wonder how long before someone punk-ifies EG Rarity?

Edit: If this were season 2, "Rarity as a lemon" would also become a fanart fad.

I agree we need Starlight, Trixie and Maud going on adventures together in Season 8. Make it happen writers let's turn this fantastic duo into an amazing trio.

Too be fair Daring-do absolutely was responsible for the damages, intentional or not it all happened because of her. Caballeron just made sure ponies knew she was responsible without providing any context.

Today's episode was great, there was alot of fun with continuity in the background such as granny smith running a stand with grand pear as well as Big Mac and Sugar Belle being together at Sweet Apple Acres.

Also Zecora has a speaking role for the first time in nearly 2 years and... she sounds different. I'm told it's the same VA so maybe it's been so long she forgot how to do the voice. Nothing wrong with it it just stood out to me.

I liked hippie changeling in To Change a Changeling. Pharynx was a bit funny, because he reminds me of how I pick on my little brothers sometimes, but we still get along. And the fight at the end was cool.

Daring Done was pretty cool with that legend and Caballeron trying, and being found out at the end, to set up Daring Do.

I thought It isn't the Mane Thing about You was an episode that probably would've been better back in, say, season 3, possibly. But I still liked it nonetheless. Rarity feeling the beauty inside was even cooler with her punk rock look. And Pinkie was pretty funny.

Yeah, more Starlight and Trixie wouldn't hurt anyone.

I'd much rather just see Starlight and Maud, or Trixie and Maud. Trixie and Starlight together just seem like a toxic friendship that will inevitably end with one feeling like dirt and the other not knowing that they've done any wrong.

I give it until about 2pm Eastern.

I liked hippie changeling

Tree Bugger.

4670206
Hehehe. Treehugger's changeling counterpart.:rainbowlaugh:

You understand us Trixie Fans!

I'd love a Starlight episode in which Trixie and Sunburst meet.
That would be fun.

4670206
I don't see any on Derpi yet, though there are a few porn edits of / pics inspired by that one ass-shot PF took.

I really loved 7x17, specifically because in this episode, rather than the usual "enlightened ponies instruct backwards primitives in Friendship" Imperialistic episodes we've had before, this was mostly Trixie and Starlight stumbling around, making things worse and then getting lucky, with Thorax and Pharynx actually saving the day. The whole underlying reason Starlight and Trixie are so entertaining is because they actually aren't that good at friendship.

7x18 was nice because it calls out Daring Do for showing up, wrecking shit, robbing these people's temples and tombs, all so she can keep these supposedly dangerous artifacts out of Caballeron's hands, and instead lying around on the floor of her cottage.

4670206 What if that WAS Treehugger all along?

4670612

What if that WAS Treehugger all along?

Would it matter if it was? :trixieshiftright:

4670615 Someone needs to tell GaPJaxie to write a quick sequel where Tree Hugger asks that of Fluttershy, Fluttershy indicates she doesn't care, and then they go back to getting high.

So, when Twilight used that mustache spell on Spike, did an unseen circus ringleader lose his sh*t?

Punk Rarity was so sexy to me. Like, is there NOTHING that mare can't do right?

4670662
Not to mention it takes 11 months for a foal to even be BORN, and Flurry Heart has been born and all, so....yeah...

There are a lot of really stupid fuckwits in this fandom.

Am I the only one who found both Punk Rarity and Extra-Bouncy Mane Pinkie appealing?

Also, as a public announcement, silly string and open flames DO NOT MIX. NO JOKE. Look up the videos. It can turn a party into a trip to the emergency room.

Zecora deserved much of the blame for the whole mess in today's eppy. When you put two identical-looking liquids into two identical bottles, a mix-up mishap is inevitable. She should have fixed Rarity's mane, since she was responsible for its demise. Jeez, all different kinds of bottles hang from strings all around her hut. One of them should have been used.

I sense Punk Rarity in a future story chapter. :raritywink:

Also....

Also, OUCH Fluttershy: "I guess it's harder when she feels like the lemon." OUCH.

Rarity stopped being a lemon and became a rosebud. ....and to make sense of this gag:
