Notes on Calico Driftwood and My Namesake's Origin

Here's some background music. I'll be going on a bit of a tangent, so you may be here a little while. ()^_^

The chapter with Levi Vs. Calico is coming up pretty soon. There are some notes on the latter that are too lengthy for me to share at the end, so I'm going to lay them out here instead.

    Status Update, April 2024 Edition

Part of my slowness in writing M.L.G.'s latest chapter is for the usual reasons: tiredness, minor depression, having other things on the mind, that sort of thing. However, in what can only be described as "whimsy", I've recently decided to complete a list of all of the intentional shout-outs and references in the story as of the most recent chapter.

    Something To Think About

I have a message to share with prospective authors. If you go into writing a story---be it as a living, or just for fun---don't automatically assume that what you're doing is wholly original.

    Tired, Running On Empty

That pretty much summarizes my mental state of the past few days. Constantly tired (half due to not getting enough sleep and half due to my walking regimen), and I can't really think of things I want to write for the story. You know you're having trouble finding things to talk about when your brain fishes for tuna, but ends up with guppies instead.

Got to see the movie today, but how I got there is a minor story in itself.

I'd been toying for a while with a decision: should I go see the movie in theaters if it ever showed up in town, or should I just wait until it hits store shelves and grab it then? For a while the decision was made for me, since the local theater only ever showed older or more popular films, and even then only on the weekends. Before that, the theater was closed for a couple years because the owners weren't getting the profits needed to upgrade their tech.

Then on... I think it was either this past Monday or Tuesday, I had to cross our town's Main Street to get to the local library on my lunch break. The theater there doesn't put up posters or anything, they just post what's showing the coming weekend on the building's marquee. I looked up at it, and did a double take. There it was: My Little Pony, plain as day. And just like that, I had to make a decision.

I made tentative plans to see it this afternoon, but in addition to my Crohn's going stir-crazy, I was dealing with major anxiety. I mean, think about it: sure, you all know the show has its fair share of male fans, but it's still a nearsighted obese guy going to the theater on his own to see a kids' movie about technicolor equines. Those who know me know that I have a lifelong history of being picked on, agitated, and bullied; I couldn't stop dwelling on worse-case scenarios. As a result of all this, I had a headache and was feeling nauseous by the end of the morning.

Nothing a few acetaminophen and an hour's nap couldn't alleviate, but I still wasn't feeling great by the time I had to leave.

Anyway, I saw the movie. It was alright, I guess. It wasn't the greatest film out there, but I was smiling by the time it was over, and that's more than I can say for most entertainment nowadays. First time I'd ever heard Sia, and whenever the cast started singing, I just closed my eyes and let my ears do all the work. No real objections. (And I was the only one who stuck around throughout the credits.)

The scene where the crew of the airship take a lunch break instead of tossing the Six overboard reminded me of an old Peabody & Sherman short I saw once. In it, there was this violent historical battle going on that was abruptly interrupted at a specific time because the guys didn't want to miss their tea break. Minor, but I still thought it was pretty funny.

This has no real relevance to the rest of this post, but I'm never going to the theater here in town again. Just throwing that out there.

Finally, here's my YouTube channel for anyone out there who cares. Ciao mein, everyone.
