Weirdass way to remap tank controls, or how to get a 12 speed cruise control out of a Stuart (Warthunder) · 6:03am Nov 4th, 2017
Before I get into this idea, reason why I thought about it: There was a video I saw a while back where the narrator was struggling to get the speed right for one of those stabilizers. Cruise control goes too high, and manual mode doesn't have cruise control options.
Later, another thread mentioned how relative controls do something similar to cruise control, but with a bit of a lag that I couldn't iron out after fifteen minutes of messing around in test map.
Solution? This mess.
Assumes standard WASD keybinds, steering needs not be touched. Personally, I also normally use E, R, and F for neutral gear and cruise control/gear changes. Recommend making a copy of your old keybinds in case this ends up confusing you more.
Keybinds
First, rebind W and S to upshift and downshift, respectively.
E is still neutral gear. This is now how you brake with this setup.
Next, turn relative control on. I use R for maximum, and F for reset axis. Minimum value seems optional right now, haven't noticed any issues. Move the sensitivities all the way to the max since you're going to be either red-lining or braking from now on.
How to drive:
When the tank loads in, Hold R for a second. Your driver is now hellbent on holding the throttle until you tap F to shut him up.
Tap W to upshift. Your driver will now hold the tank at that gear's redline. Useful if you want to keep it slow enough for the simple stablizers.
To slow down, tap S to downshift. This game doesn't simulate overheating or clutch damage, so you will be fine.
If you need to slow down in a hurry, or even reverse, hit E to go into Neutral, then tap S.
If you want to roll to a stop, tap F. It works, kinda.
End result: You now have cruise control and control of the gearing if and when the driver inevitably starts acting like an idiot on hills and turns. You're unlikely to accidentally hold S in manual mode trying to reverse and end up doing nothing but hold the brakes.
Downside, I guess?: You now need to go into neutral first before you can reverse fast, and occasionally you may forget you need to tap W 5 or so times to get up to speed and instead slowly roll. Just rolling is a bit harder, though first or second gear kinda works. You don't really have actual brakes either, and steep slopes may make you slide down them. Rebind other buttons for brakes, perhaps. Maybe E? Hmmm. Then again, have we ever needed actual brakes?
PS: Yes you do need brakes, or a key to reset axis for the throttle relative control. Apparently you roll down slopes like this.
For anyone who plays WT tanks.
