Summer Wars, SSDs, PVA · 9:00pm Feb 7th, 2012
Summer Wars by Madhouse, FUNimation, Warner Brothers, a comedy/romance/action anime of 2009 is a story about a boy, a girl and her family, and a giant global network. Rarely do I find movies that are truly worthy of posting a review. Summer Wars is one of the few. The heros are not obvious, nor is the ending. It brings to light the issues facing putting so much trust into the internet, and our security software while being a wonderful and creative story. Look this anime up... it is well worth the time. Available on Netflix via DVD service only, or through similar mail services (and the less than legal areas of the internet of course).

Solid State Drives are the next generation of data storage technology in our ever growing world. While expensive, complex, and low in space, they are truly the future of computing. Solid Sate Drives (SSD) use NAND gate based data storage and are most similar to the RAM all computers use. The trouble with Hard Disk Drives (HDD) are that they are slow to respond, require files to be sequential, and are susceptible to shock damage. SSDs can access any area within them at any time and do not require files to be sequential. They offer extraordinary speed and reliability when implemented properly. However, due to the price, SSDs are still rarely used by home consumers and support is a little lacking. SSDs have stability issues, while not devastating, more than the average home user can likely handle. SSDs also have a limited number of re-writes associated with each page. Poor coordination between the SSD and operating system can cause excessive re-writes that ultimately lead to the drive being unable to change data.
While they may seem scary, SSDs are worth the investment for those whom can handle their computer and are being held back by their hard drive. Even the slowest of SSDs will outperform the best HDDs on the market. To date, the fastest speed a HDD has ever sustained is approx. 150 MB/s. The average SSD can sustain 200 MB/s.
